Tips You Need to Make Great-looking YouTube or Instagram Videos

Tips to make successful YouTube videos

If you’ve been wanting to start a YouTube video channel to show off your amazing makeup skills, display your ukulele talents, or show off any other creative ideas you’ve got, we have some advice to make you (or your cat) look great on video, without spending a fortune.

Set a goal

What do you want to achieve with your YouTube videos? Teach a skill? Make people laugh? Engage more followers? Once you figure out what your goal is, that will set the tone for the videos and determine what kind of equipment and planning you’ll need. If you’re shooting fun, short videos, avoid making things look over-produced. If you’re going for a more serious tone with a focus on people talking or teaching, you’ll need a bit more polish and planning.

Write a script

Wait! Don’t run for the hills yet. You don’t need to write pages of dialogue if you’re just shooting a fun clip for your work’s Instagram feed. By ‘write a script’, we just mean write down the things that you need to accomplish your goal. For that goofy video, your script could look something like this:

  • Start on Karen from Finance riding her bike down the hallway
  • She rolls toward camera and goes past, singing show tunes at top volume the whole time
  • Cut to company logo

From that, you’ll know you need: to check the lighting in the hallway; to tell everyone to stay out of the hallway between 3:30-4:00 pm; to get a bike and a helmet; to tell Karen to practise her favourite show tune; and to have a digital file of the company logo. You’ll be ready and confident, and the whole thing will take a lot less time than if you were scrambling to throw things together on the spot.

If your YouTube video is going to be longer or more serious, we recommend some additional preparation. Write yourself a script (or at least some talking points) and practise it in the mirror a few times before you start rolling.

Get the gear

For the fun and quick clip category, the best investment you can make is an up-to-date smartphone with high-quality video. According to tech experts, the Samsung Galaxy S9+, Apple iPhone X, and the Google Pixel 2 XL are among the best phones currently on the market for shooting video.

If being a YouTube video guru is your calling and you’re ready to invest in a camera, whether it’s DSLR or mirorrless, start with a visit to a London Drugs camera specialist. They love talking tech, and they can show you the best deals in-store. Some of the cameras you’ll want to consider include the Canon EOS M50 15-45 Kit, and the Canon EOS 80D 18-135 IS USM.

Light it up

We have three words for you when it comes to lighting your videos: windows, windows, and windows. That’s right – all you really need to make a nice-looking video is lots of natural light. Set up your subject facing a big window and go to town! It looks great, it’s free, and natural light will give an easy-going, casual feel to your videos.

The downside to using natural lighting is that you’re at the mercy of mother nature. Sunlight is inconsistent, and what if daylight doesn’t fit into your shooting schedule? You’ll need some artificial lighting help, and a London Drugs camera specialist can help you set up the best video lighting kit that suits your needs and budget (consider the Manfrotto Lumie Art 6 LED for a nice mid-range video lighting kit).

When setting up your lighting, stick to the three-point method for a professional look:

  1. Key Light – This is the light shining directly on the subject. Experiment with colour, intensity, and position in the room, depending on the mood of your video.
  2. Fill Light – Lower-intensity light that’s also shining on the subject, but at more of a side angle to fill in the shadows cast by the key. A reflector can also be used for the fill, especially in natural light.
  3. Back Light – Shines on the shoulders, back, and top of the subject’s head. This step is not always necessary, but it gives dimension to the shot and separates the subject from the background.

Understanding lighting is key to good YouTube videos

Can you hear me now?

One big difference between good and not-so-good video content is sound quality. Yes, all smartphones and cameras now have built-in mics, but they’re not enough if you’re shooting from further away than a metre or two. Don’t worry – sound gear doesn’t have to be complicated! All you need is something to record a secondary audio track. Most phones come with a voice recorder app, so the easiest option is to borrow a second phone, place it close to your subject, and hit record, then lay that audio track on top of the video during editing.

If you want to take your sound quality up one more notch, an external microphone will do wonders. London Drugs has a great selection of recording gear, so pay a visit to your local LD electronics specialist for help choosing the audio setup that’s right for you. Some mics to consider include the RODE Video Mic Go, RODE VideoMic Pro, Blue Microphone Snowball iCE, and the Blue Yeti USB Mic.

But wait, does your video sound like it’s coming from an empty cave? You’ll need soundproofing to eliminate that bounce. Make sure there are rugs or carpet on the floor, and hang thick blankets on the walls around where you’re shooting (in a place that doesn’t mess up the look of your shot, of course).

Ready, set, shoot!

For shooting on the go, give your arms a break and get a selfie stick. Go for a versatile model like the S-Line Selfie Stick that has an expandable handle, an adjustable clamp that fits all smartphones, and a removable head that can be attached to a tripod. Or, if you want to add add intelligent functions like cinematic zoom control and built-in sensors for stability, try the DJI Osmo Mobile 2 .

Speaking of tripods, you’ll need one if you’re going to be shooting video of people or things that are sitting in one place. If you’re using a smartphone or small camera, a mini tripod works just fine on a table or stack of books, and it is versatile for different settings. For shooting with a larger camera, a full-sized tripod works best. Some tripods to consider include the Joby GorillaPod 3K Kit and the Joby GorillaPod 5K Kit. The Joby GorillaPod Rig Upgrade Kit works with both the 3K and 5K kits and enables you to add additional devices as needed. Looking for a solid carry bag for all your new gear? Check out the Lowepro Fastpack BP 250 or the Manfrotto Windsor Reporter Messenger Bag.

Fix it in Post

Now that you have all of this beautiful footage, what do you do with it? Edit it, of course! This can be the most time-consuming step in making good videos, but it can also be the most fun. There are many affordable and free video editing apps out there: iMovie, Videoshop, Splice, FilmoraGo, and Adobe Premiere Clip are all perfect for quick and fun edits. If you’re interested in longer-form YouTube-style videos, all the pros swear by Adobe Premiere, Corel VideoStudio or Final Cut Pro, but these are more expensive and require some learning time.

Want to add music? Before you hit up Spotify, remember that it’s illegal to use copyrighted music without written permission from the artist. (You probably already know this from your cat video with the Rihanna soundtrack that was rudely muted on Instagram.) There are a few ways to get music into your videos legally: ask a musical friend for one of their original tracks, use the music provided by your editing software, or search for a royalty-free song from a music service (there are loads to choose from).

We hope this video content starter kit will be helpful on your road to internet stardom. Want to show off your best video? Post a link in the comments!

6 Ways to Improve Your iPhone’s Performance

Tips to make your iPhone work like new

Photo by Devon Janse van Rensburg on Unsplash

With the release of the brand new shiny iPhone XS, smartphone fans are clamouring to get their hands on Apple’s latest offering. But you don’t necessarily need a new phone, especially if your current iPhone isn’t all that old.

However, if you’re an iPhone aficionado, you know that after a while it seems as if your phone is slowing down, or just not performing as well as it did when it was the shiny new phone on the block. So how can you improve the performance of your current model and avoid shelling out for the latest one? Here are 6 tips on how to improve your iPhone’s performance.

1. Restart Your iPhone

Restart your iPhone to improve its performance

Photo by Marc-André Julien on Unsplash

If you have ever had to troubleshoot computer issues with your office’s IT expert, you know that the number one step is usually powering off your computer and re-starting it. Similarly many of us rarely turn off our iPhones completely. We generally just plug them in at night without powering them down. Just as shutting down your computer or laptop often helps clear out the bugs causing problems, it can be equally helpful for your iPhone. Hold your power button down for 10 seconds, wait 30 seconds, and then restart your phone.

2. Check Your Software Updates

Updating to the latest version of iOS often fixes bugs and may improve your phone’s performance, while also introducing new features. However, if you have an older model, your phone may not support the latest version, so this strategy will only help newer phones. To check whether or not you’re running the latest version of iOS:

  • Click on the Settings app
  • Scroll down to General
  • Click on Software Update
  • If there is an update waiting to be installed, scroll down and click on Install Now. The update will take around 10-15 minutes to complete

3. Shut Down Apps Running in the Background

Close apps to improve your iPhone's performance

To close down your apps, double click the Home button and then swipe the apps up to close them. As was highlighted in our recent post about preserving your iPhone battery, there are two opinions on whether or not to fully close your apps rather than just minimizing them. While double-clicking on an app and fully closing it is what many of us are told to do (since having them running in the background is a drain on the phone’s battery), on the other hand, when you’re fully closing apps down, it takes more power to re-open them every time. For the purposes of speeding up your iPhone, we’re going to suggest trying this technique to see whether or not it makes a difference in your phone’s overall performance.

4. Delete Unused Apps, Photos, Music, and Videos

To identify which of your apps are monopolizing your storage space, here are the steps to check:

  • Click on the Settings app
  • Scroll down to General
  • Click on iPhone Storage

As you scroll down you’ll see the list of your apps and how much space they’re taking up on your phone. This is a great way to decide which of your apps can be deleted. As you tap on the app name you’ll be directed to another screen where you can delete the app.

It’s also a great idea to occasionally scroll through your photos, music, and videos and delete any old media you no longer use, as these can also be slowing your phone down.

5. Turn off Automatic Downloads

Not only will this step improve your phone’s performance, it will also help preserve your battery. Here’s how to do this:

  • Click on the Settings app
  • Scroll down to iTunes and App Store
  • You’ll see several buttons under Automatic Downloads, including Music, Apps, Books and Audiobooks, and Updates. Toggle all buttons to off.

6. Reset Your iPhone

If you’ve tried all of the above steps and your smartphone is still not performing as you feel it should be, try a full reset. It takes a little longer than merely re-starting, but it can be an effective tool in fixing the bugs slowing down your phone. Press and hold the Home and Power buttons at the same time. Keep holding them until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears. Once you see that, you can let the buttons go.

Hopefully these tips will fix your performance issues, but if none of these steps work for you then it may be time to admit you need a new phone after all. For all things iPhone, visit London Drugs and speak to our tech experts about all your smartphone needs.

Evolution Meets Revolution as Canon Announces the All-New EOS R System

Optical Innovation Inspires the Next Leap Forward in Imaging

Pre-order your Canon EOS R today!

BRAMPTON, ON., September 5, 2018 – Canon Canada Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the next revolution in the company’s long history of innovative and award-winning camera systems, the EOS R system featuring the newly designed RF mount. Recognizing the need to advance optical design, the Company sought to create a versatile and powerful new system that supports all current EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses1, and also provides the optical advancements and engineering flexibility to build upon for years to come.

When Canon set forth to develop a new interchangeable lens camera system, they focused on three core optical principles: high-image quality, high-specification performance, and compact design. Recognizing that optics is the foundation for any camera system, the RF mount was conceived to open new doors in optical design. Canon’s new RF mount features the same size diameter as the EF mount (54mm) and shorter back focus distance. This allows for lenses to sit closer to the sensor (the focal plane) and allowed Canon optical engineers to reimagine lens design utilizing larger rear lens elements to produce an image on the full-frame sensor. This new optical formula has paved the way for higher performing lenses. In addition, the Canon RF mount features a high-speed 12-pin communication system that provides faster and more in-depth communication between the camera and lens over existing Canon mount systems.

The EOS R system is designed for full, uninhibited compatibility with all existing EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses through the use of mount adapters2. In addition, through the use of the optional Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter or Control Ring Mount Adapter these lenses, in fact, gain functionality.

The First in a New System: The EOS R
The new Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera features a 30.3 megapixel CMOS sensor that is powered by the Company’s latest image processor, DIGIC 8, enabling shooting at up to 8.0 frames per second3. The new camera inherits a lot from Canon’s legacy in both EOS and Cinema EOS. Video storytellers can capture stunning 4K UHD video up to 30fps and record in 10-bit 4:2:2 (with an external recorder). The EOS R also comes with the ability to shoot Canon Log, providing 12 stops of dynamic range, minimal loss of detail in shadows and highlighted areas and an increased range of choices when colour grading. Users with an existing collection of Canon lenses will be excited to know that all EF and EF-S lens are compatible with the camera. In order to do so, photographers and videographers can choose between using one of three new mount adapters, each uniquely designed to meet the individual needs of the user.

The new Canon EOS R camera features Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus with 5,655 manually selectable AF points4, supporting AF at up to f/11 with a 384 zone (24×16) real-time metering system. With f/1.2 lenses, the camera astonishingly boasts AF sensitivity in low light in as little as EV-6. When using the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens with the EOS R, the camera can focus in as little as 0.05 seconds with Dual Pixel CMOS AF5, making it the fastest autofocus speed in the world6. These features provide photographers and videographers with Canon’s most advanced AF system to date. The EOS R also features a silent shutter setting when shooting in single-shot mode; an important feature for those who need to capture imagery without disrupting the scene. An upcoming free firmware update will enable silent shutter in continuous shooting mode as well.

Thoughts from the First Users
“I think every camera system has its place and it’s all about having the right tool for the job,” reported acclaimed outdoor photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Jimmy Chin. “The new EOS R system for me in particular is very useful for the kind of shooting that I do in the mountains, where I need to worry about the size and weight. Having the option to use the new RF lenses or the EF lenses is really great.”

“I was instantly impressed with how quickly the EOS R was able to focus,” remarked celebrated fashion photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Lindsay Adler. “Whether my subject was moving or I was shooting in near-complete darkness, I had no problem getting tack-sharp focus in every shot. It was a relief to know my gear wasn’t going to hold me back from executing my vision, but instead it would really help me to execute this vision.”

“For us, it’s all about getting the shot no one else can get, and a lot of this has to do with the camera,” says Devin Graham, director and filmmaker behind YouTube’s DevinSuperTramp. “The new EOS R will become one of our main cameras. It has a very small footprint, yet is able to create amazing images. As for the lenses, the new RF 28-70mm F2 has just become one of my all-time favourites. I’ll be bringing it on every project.”

Conveniently placed just to the right of the EVF, Canon has introduced a new Multi-Function Bar that will allows users to more easily access their customizable settings, such as AF, ISO and White Balance. Users will have the option to either slide or tap the bar to gain access to the settings and adjust on-the-go as they deem necessary depending on each particular shooting situation.

Answering the demand for enhanced mobile editing of RAW image files, Canon is also announcing a new application, Digital Photo Professional Express (DPP Express). In combination with an updated Canon Camera Connect App, DPP Express enables users to send, view, edit and process CR3 RAW files on their iPad7. A free download of the app will be available October 2018.

Additional noteworthy features of the EOS R Camera include:

  • RF Mount Compatible with RF Lenses and EF/EF-S Lenses
  • Built-in EVF with 3.69 Million Dots, Vari-angle Touchscreen LCD and Dot-matrix LCD Panel
  • ISO range of 100-40,000, expandable to 102,400
  • USB 3.1 in-camera charging support
  • Built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi® providing easy sharing to compatible smart devices and social media sites
  • Single UHS-II SD card slot
  • CR3(RAW/C-RAW) and Dual Pixel RAW Support
  • Dust and weather resistant

Availability and Pricing

The Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera is scheduled to be available in October 2018 for an estimated retail price of $2,999.99* for the body only. It will also be sold as a body-and-lens kit with the new RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens for $4,399.99*.
