Taking off on an adventure and uncertain how to travel light and arrive at your destination wrinkle-free? Follow these ingenious strategies and perfect your suitcase packing.

Pick the bag that’s right for you

  1. Measure your carry-on. Be sure your carry-on will fit on the plane in order to avoid extra charges. Remember that 21 by 14 by 9-inch dimensions will fit in any overhead bin.
  2. Know the full-size case rules. Four wheeled hard sided suitcases are best for travelling and should have a butterfly opening for easier packing. For a visual, take the Victorinox Spectra 2.0 (above) as the ideal example.
  3. Watch your bag. Use a luggage tracker like LugLoc to locate a lost suitcase and remember to label your bag with an email address for easy contact.

What to pack

  1. Go light on clothing. A good rule of thumb is three tops for every bottom. Limit shoes to sneakers and two secondary pairs – one casual and one formal.
  2. Look for wrinkle repelling fabrics. Blends with Lycra, nylon, or polyester will better survive the journey wrinkle-free. Wool or stretched cotton are the best of the natural fabrics, while textures and prints can also help mask fold marks.
  3. Pack a just-in-case kit. Bring a Downy wrinkle releaser and Tide stain remover for emergencies.
  4. Prep your carry-on. Bring layers to combat chilly airplane cabins and pack a toothbrush and a day’s worth of prescriptions in case your luggage is lost.
  5. Invest in useful technology. To make a long flight fly by, use noise-cancelling headphones like Sony’s ZX series. Other products like the Logiix World Travel Charger USB adapter, designed to work in over 150 countries, can help ensure that all of your devices work across the globe.

How to pack

  1. Learn what to roll and what to fold. If using a duffel bag, roll all of your clothes. If not, roll knit items and fold more structured pieces.
  2. Be efficient. Packing cubes can keep swimsuits, gym clothes, delicates and dirty laundry separate and compressed.
  3. Fight wrinkles with trash bags. Line the bottom and top of your luggage with trash bags. The slippery material helps prevent wrinkles from setting.
  4. Place content strategically. Stash heavy items near the wheelbase to keep the suitcase steady. A common formula is to then place packing cubes, rolled garments, folded clothes, bulky jackets, and fragile items in the bag.
  5. Maximize every inch of space. Use every section of your bag. Wrap belts around the outside perimeter, stuff socks into shoes, tuck accessories into pockets and fill bra cups with underwear to prevent distortion.

4 Scenic Reasons to Visit Saskatchewan

As popular as our #beautifulcanada photo series is, we can’t help but notice that some of the favourite posts are from our interior provinces. We’re talking to you, Saskatchewan. We may only have four London Drugs stores there but there’s no denying the wonder of Saskatchewan scenery. Here, four reasons you should probably make a trip out to the underrated province. Bonus: The people are as lovely as the scenery. Check out a small-town diner for a real Corner Gas effect.

1. The Northern Lights

This wonder of the world is visible all over the province, but some of the best views have been from the TransCanada Highway outside of Saskatoon. People travel from around the world to see the Aurora Borealis, so if you’re Canadian and you’ve never been, take advantage. You might have to travel to get there, but the show’s free.

4 Fantastic Weekend Roadtrips for Vancouverites

Vancouverites tend to stick around the city more than people from other major Canadian centres. Perhaps this is due to the diverse options for entertainment – restaurants and microbreweries, shopping and shows, hiking and sailing. Maybe it’s because many locals don’t own cars (being spoiled with excellent public transit and car sharing services). However, it’s always nice to get away, so we’re saying pack up your Evo and hit the road in search of new horizons. We’ve got four great recommendations here.

4 Spectacular Weekend Getaways for Calgarians

Where to go for a weekend away from Cowtown? Obviously the Okanagan and Lake Louise are worthy destinations, but we’re willing to bet that most Calgarians already hit both of them on the regular (wine tours in the summer and ski trips in the winter, right?). Instead, we’re sending you off the beaten path to some drivable destinations that deserve a little more credit.

Drumheller, Alberta (Driving distance: 135 km)

Of course there’s the Royal Tyrrell Museum and the hoodoos, but Drumheller is also a top pick purely because of its beautiful landscape. Camping & hiking in the Badlands will treat visitors to Horseshoe Canyon, a mini Grand Canyon, where you can view the sedimentary layers of the land. There’s also the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dinosaur Provincial Park, where vast amounts of dinosaur bones have been discovered. Take a tour and revel in the long history of the beautiful province.

Jasper, Alberta (Driving distance: 413 km)

Heading to Alberta’s other National Park may seem like an extra far drive, but keep in mind that the Columbia Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) from Banff to Jasper is agreed upon by many to be Canada’s most beautiful drive. Take your time on the drive, and expect to stop for several photo ops. Once in Jasper, you can hike, bike, wander, ski, snowmobile – whatever you want! A fun aspect of skiing Marmot Basin is the ski-out parking lots. Join in on the fun with the locals by tailgating for lunch.

Kalispell, Montana (Driving distance: 423 km)

Despite the declining value of the Canadian dollar, we had to include at least one roadtrip south of the border. Calgarians are lucky to be so close to the beautiful rolling hills of Montana, so why not take advantage? Whether it’s ski-out accommodations at nearby Whitefish Mountain Resort or the rustic village culture in downtown Kalispell, you’re in for a treat.

Edmonton, Alberta (Driving distance: 299 km)

We know the rivalry is intense between Calgarians and Edmontonians, but hear us out. Sometimes it’s just fun to go to another city for a weekend. What other excuse do you have to get a hotel room and wrap up in a fluffy bathrobe? Nicknamed “Canada’s Festival City,” you know there’s always going to be something going on for entertainment. It’s also got a river valley that’s 22 times bigger than New York’s Central Park. Bike and kayak in the summer, or snowshoe and cross-country ski in the winter for a real treat. Lastly, when Edmonton opens their new hockey arena, Rogers Place, in fall 2016, it’s going to be a must-see (and in the process, you can see new NHL all-star Connor McDavid play).

Staying healthy while you travel

travel_clinic

Everyone loves a vacation. The promise of complete relaxation, of adventure, and of seeing first-hand the sights and customs of other lands can be magical. So too can the build-up to a vacation—the planning, the packing, the counting down of days until you leave home.

Part of this planning should include a visit to a travel clinic to make sure you have all the right vaccinations to prevent becoming ill on, or after, your vacation. While relatively few vacations lead to illness (aside from the ubiquitous Montezuma’s Revenge), the risks involved are not worth taking. Hepatitis, for example, can irreparably damage the liver and its prevention should be taken seriously.

Why You Should Care About Hep A

According to the Canadian Liver Foundation, Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus which attacks the liver1. The Center for Disease Control states that new cases reported in the U.S. is around 3,000 each year—a 90% decrease of the last several decades.2

So why should you care about Hepatitis A? Because it is often referred to as “traveller’s disease”, an illness contracted by travelling in developing countries that have poor sanitation and poor hygiene.

How is Hep A transmitted?

The Hep A virus is only found in the stool (feces) of an infected person. Close contact with an infected person who doesn’t practice proper hygiene can spread the virus. The virus can also be spread via food and water—such as eating food that has been washed in contaminated water. When food preparers don’t practice safe hygiene while handling food, you could contract it by eating in a restaurant.
