Trip of a Lifetime: The Story of an LDExtras Member’s Dream Experience to Machu Picchu

As part of the recent launch of LDExtras, London Drugs gave new members a taste of the LDExtras experiential rewards: we surprised five lucky winners with their choice of one of eight $10,000 ultimate dream experiences.

One lucky winner, Susan, won the photography adventure of a lifetime. She brought her daughter, Keeley, to explore Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Susan captured the beauty of Machu Picchu with a deluxe camera package from London Drugs. Here, she shares photos of her spectacular trip, and tells the story of her eye-opening adventure to Peru.

We started in Lima, and had a day to settle in before the rest of our group arrived. We we went on a short tour of Lima, and saw the sights in the beautiful Miraflores.

In the evening, we met our G Adventure guide, Kantu, and the other members of our group. It was total serendipity–there were two other single moms in our group and both had one child too! There were seven of us all together, Roisian and her 8 year old son Liam from Ireland, Snow and her 6 year old daughter from Ottawa, and Keeley and myself, plus our guide. It was perfect.

We had a nice dinner out in Miraflores, then off to bed as we had to start our day at 6 a.m. the next morning.

The next day we travelled by plane, bus, and boat to reach the Amazon. WOW!! What an adventure. We met our guide for the Amazon, Julio, who I can best describe as a young Crocodile Hunter. He was so funny; the kids just loved him. Julio had such a warm personality and was so enthusiastic. This man LOVED his job as a naturalist guide for the Amazon–and boy, was he knowledgeable.

We arrived at the Tambopata Eco Lodge after a two-hour boat ride down the Amazon River. This unique location means that electricity is only available for five hours a day, and hot water is only a possibility, but what an incredible experience. We spent two nights there–it was very hot, about 30 degrees and muggy—but so worth it.

We were fed delicious meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Julio took us on a night walk in the Amazon Jungle. We spotted a tarantula, snakes, termites, exotic birds, spiders, and all sorts of creepy crawlies. The best part was that we could see every star and the Milky Way–it was absolutely breathtaking! Living in the city, we just don’t get a chance to see stars like that.

At one point on the night walk, Julio separated all of us by about 100 feet or so and had us turn off our flashlights and meditate. It was by far the coolest thing we did out there. There we were in the middle of the Amazon Jungle with no light, in the complete darkness, listening to the sounds of the creatures and staring at the stars. This is a moment I will never forget.

The next night, we went caimen hunting on the Amazon River. Again, an out of this world experience! Being in a boat on the Amazon River at night looking for these unique lizards…how cool is that!

We were sad to leave the jungle but ready for our next adventure: a trip to Cusco which is 3,399m above sea level. I was worried about getting altitude sickness, but thankfully everyone in our group was fine.

We spent one night in Cusco, had a lovely dinner, explored the city, and met some llamas and alpacas. Then we were up at 6am to catch the bus to take us to the train to Machu Picchu town.

I loved the fact that we were able to see so many parts of Peru. The countryside is breathtaking, and the energy of the villages is captivating.

We had a beautiful train ride to Machu Picchu town, which is on the side of a mountain. There are no cars; you just walk everywhere. The narrow streets are busy with restaurants and places for tourists. Since everyone has to stop here to go to Machu Picchu, tourism is a huge part of daily life.

We had dinner there, then went to bed early as we were up at 4:45 a.m. so that we could get to Machu Picchu by sunrise.

We took a very scary 30-minute bus ride up a one way narrow road with a very steep drop off to Machu Picchu. Once we arrived, I was shocked at how busy it was! Our guide told us that 3,500 people go through Machu Picchu every day.

I was speechless when we were there. Such beauty and history in one place! I felt so awestruck and blessed that I had this opportunity to bring Keeley to see this place.

We spent about five hours at Machu Picchu, then went back to Cusco where we were all exhausted and excited from our adventure.

The next day was one of my favourites of the trip. G Adventures supports charitable initiatives, so they have sponsored an after-school care program in Cusco. The children who attend this program are handpicked because they come from extreme situations–poverty, violence, abuse, homelessness. We had the opportunity to volunteer at this program for a few hours. We went to the local market and bought some essentials for them, like rice, pasta, oil,  and canned food, and we bought the children some colouring supplies and balls.

We arrived and the kids in our group volunteered and taught the children English. They drew pictures on the white board and the kids had to say the words in English, and they did charades. The best part was when they all played ball together. These children have so little, but were so happy and kind to us–it was truly heartwarming.

The rest of our trip was spent exploring and eating, and enjoying the sights and sounds of Cusco.

I am still in awe that I actually won this amazing prize. As a single mom, this kind of guided trip is something I would never be able to afford. This was truly an experience of a lifetime. My daughter just said to me today, “I miss Peru.” She absolutely loved it. We have both got the travel bug now, and this experience has given me a new perspective on life. Life is not about stuff and things, it is about experiences and sharing those experiences with the ones you love.

Thank you London Drugs for truly changing my life. I am so blessed and forever grateful for this opportunity.

Sun Care 101: A Parents’ Guide to Sun Safety

It can be time-consuming (and maybe a little annoying) to apply protective sunscreen on you and your family members—especially if these people happen to be squealing kids, just waiting to get outside in the sunshine! We’ve got some great tricks and tips for easy (ish) sun care application that will help keep your family covered. Here’s our guide to sun safety for parents.

Rules for Parents

Plan on five minutes per body

You might be thinking, “That is completely nuts! Sunscreen doesn’t take that long.” You may be right, but many of us groan at the thought of applying sunscreen on our kids because we don’t plan enough time for it. After gathering up all the snacks, water bottles, extra clothes, towels, sand toys, and so on, we’re already leaving an hour later than we wanted to. At this point, we’re often not in a good head space to tackle a rushed sunscreen job, so we either lose our tempers, give up, or decide to apply upon arrival. None of these are ideal.

So, yes, allowing five minutes per person is over-planning, but if you budget this much time there is a better chance you’ll actually leave the house smiling (and maybe even have a toy shovel packed for each kid!).

Apply 20 to 30 minutes before going out

We know: what a pain! But experts say sunscreen takes 20-30 minutes to become effective. Good thing we’ve already budgeted our time at home! Plus, following this rule means slathering on sunscreen away from all of the playground distractions and blowing sand. You may even schedule time between pajamas and getting dressed for the beach–it’s easier to apply sunscreen when kids are changing clothes. Also, remember to reapply regularly, especially after hitting the pool or the ocean for a swim.

Think of sun protection like you would a car seat

Toddlers cry and fight, but you still buckle them into a car seat (forcibly, if necessary), right? Sun protection is the same: a necessity. It’s not one of those teachable moments where you let your child choose not to wear a raincoat and get uncomfortably wet. One blistery sunburn in childhood can increase the risk of melanoma by 50%. Safety trumps tantrums, and that’s that.

Tricks for Kids

A quick internet search yields loads of tricks for making sunscreen tolerable for kids. Here are a few of our favourites.

A blogger at Happily Ever Mom lists seven ways to speed up the slather. One of her great methods is to make it into a timed challenge she calls “The Countdown”. The Countdown challenges mom or dad to finish the job before getting to number 10. She advises that parents make sure they are in charge of the counting, so they can stretch the countdown if they need to.

Another good trick is a game called “What’s Missing?” Apply everywhere but the nose, or one arm, and let your kid guess which body part still needs lotion. This gives your child the all-important power to point out mom or dad’s “mistake.”

Alternatively, you could give your child a sponge paintbrush and put her in charge of everyone’s sunscreen, like the girl in this video. It’s messy, but it works. And maybe their enthusiasm will solve this doctor’s number one complaint: that parents don’t apply enough lotion.

Sun Safety while Solo

Remember back before you had kids, when you took a book to the beach, and the biggest problem you faced was trying to put sunscreen on your own back? Simpler times. If your kids hit the pool as soon as you get there, and you don’t have help for your own sun care, we’ve got you covered there too. Here are a few hilarious, but strangely practical tips for applying sunscreen to your own hard-to-reach places. The toilet brush isn’t for everyone, but maybe a spatula or paint roller could do the trick.

As you gear up to take on the summer sun, set challenging, yet realistic goals. Try to finish the application process without losing your temper, and work on getting through a whole summer without a sunburn. You can do this!

Stay safe out there in the sunshine.

Winter Travel

If like me, you’re going to travel this winter – by mid-January, I’ve had about as much as I can take of the dark and the cold and the excuses my favorite hockey team keeps coming up with to explain why their losses keep piling up – you should be aware of this rather sobering information from a survey of tourists done by Orlando Health.

Orlando, Florida, is of course, a favourite destination for many tourists.

This report published on the Eurekalert.org web site found that an astounding (at least to me) one in four vacations ends up including at least one visit to an emergency room.

So here is a partial list of some key things that you should try to do to ensure you don’t end up in an ER on your trip.

First, and most important, I think, make sure you know which vaccines you require for the places you want to visit.

And then make even more sure to get those vaccines.

If you are on any meds, make sure to bring along an adequate amount of those drugs, and if you’re neurotic like me, you might like this idea: I always get my wife to carry a separate stash of all our meds in case I lose the ones I’m carrying.

Which is a good time to mention that I also often bring along a second set of glasses (or some spare contact lenses) just in case.

Also, make sure to carry details of pertinent and relevant medical information about yourself, such as a list of the drugs you are taking, and which conditions you have – it’s much easier to consult a pre-written list than it is to have to suddenly come up with relevant information in a stressful situation like an ER.

I also think it’s a very good idea to get travel health insurance, especially if you’re a senior.

And finally, use common sense at your destination.

Sure, it’s a vacation and you want to enjoy yourself but it’s not really a lot of fun if your travel plans are interrupted by an unwelcome visit to the ER because say, you drank too much, or you were out in the sun too long, or you did something else that’s risky which you wouldn’t have done if you had thought about it a bit more.

And hey, have a great time wherever it is you’re going.
