Happy Young Couple Driving Along Country Road in Convertible at Sunset. Freedom Adventure Road Trip

Long summer days and the freedom of the open road – it doesn’t get much better than that. However, like so many Instagram-worthy vacation ideas, pulling off the perfect summer road trip can take a little planning. That’s why we’ve pulled together this guide of summer roadtrip essentials to keep you on track for fun and adventure – and out of the ditch.

Safety First

Before you even get the car out of park, make sure that you’re prepared for a safe trip. That means making sure your car is in good working order (gas, tire pressure, washer fluid – you know the drill). If it’s been awhile since you last had your car serviced, it might be a good idea to make an appointment before you head out. Canadian Living has a handy checklist you can refer to. Don’t forget your insurance papers, ownership documents or licence! If you’re heading south of the border, make sure you have your passport and travel insurance! Check with this super-comprehensive packing list before you head out.

While you’re packing up the car, make sure you bring the essentials. Before any long road trip, it’s important to have a small first aid kit and some basic car maintenance tools. It can also be handy to have some extra bottled water and an old towel to deal with any on-the-road emergencies, from having to get underneath the car to diaper changes in, shall we say, unconventional places. Here’s a great checklist of what you might need. Finally, before you go, make sure you have a small stash of emergency cash.

Here’s how to change a tire, how to jump a car battery and how to assess any weird noises coming from your car.  Finally, here’s what to do in the event of a car accident.
