Movember Skincare 101: Changing the Face of Men’s Health

Guys… admit it. You already sneak into your partner’s stash of grooming products from time to time, don’t you? But why hide your appreciation for soft skin and silky hair? It’s time to embrace next-level grooming, especially during Movember, when you have even more hair to showcase.

Movember started in 2003 with 30 guys in Australia. From the humblest of beginnings, they sparked a global movement raising over $700 million and bringing together over 5.5 million men and women (“Mo Bros and Mo Sistas”). Most importantly, they generated open conversations about men’s health issues including cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

Physiologically, facial hair is different from the hair on your head (it’s coarser and thicker). Also, men’s skin is different than women’s skin, being about 25 percent thicker. Gear Up

Keep your beard and moustache tidy with a designated shaver. Try a kit with multiple interchangeable heads that allow for adjustable lengths if you plan on growing your hair past Movember. If you know you’re going to keep things short, keep it old school with a classic set of comb and scissors.

Oil Up

Just like you use conditioner for your hair, your beard and moustache need extra conditioning as well. Beard oils will not only bring moisture, shine, and control back to your hair, but will also help the skin underneath be less itchy.

Does this step feel too fussy? If you need to take baby steps with your “extra” grooming habits, there are plenty of two-in-one products that combine a facial moisturizer with a beard conditioner.

Cleanse

Still using bar soap on your face and beard? You’re most likely over-stripping these areas, leaving skin dry, itchy, and flaky. The skin on your face is relatively thin compared to the rest of your body. Guys, body products just don’t work up there.

You’ll be amazed at what a dedicated beard wash can do to tame your rough, unruly facial hair. And a proper facial wash will gently yet thoroughly cleanse oils, sweat, and sunscreen residue off your face without leaving it parched. Exfoliate

Everyone needs to exfoliate, especially if your skin has larger pores and is prone to being thicker and more textured. You can do this with a manual scrub that contains gentle gritty particles that will physically slough away dead skin cells, or with a chemical exfoliator that uses acids to break apart the bonds that hold onto these dead skin cells. Either way, your skin will be resurfaced making it softer and cleaner with diminished fine lines and wrinkles.

Hydrate

Hydration is key to healthy skin. All the steps above help to prep your skin for this final absorption of moisture. Think of it as a thin barrier against pollution, UV rays, wind, debris, and other elements.

Whether you have normal/combination skin, oily skin, dehydrated skin, or want built-in sun protection, there’s a moisturizer for you. And don’t forget about eyes and lips, which have the thinnest skin on your face.

For these three peel treatments, use one to three times a week in the evening. A final note about these highly effective, potent products. Use peels only at night, and religiously follow with a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day. To enter: Like this post on Instagram or Facebook and tell us your family’s biggest skin concerns!
No purchase necessary. Limit one (1) entry per social network per contest. Limit one (1) prize may be won per household. Entries must be received no later than 11:59 pm Pacific Time on October 18, 2018. London Drugs is not responsible for entries that become lost or misdirected.
Contest is open to all residents of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba who, as of the date the prize draw is made: (i) have not won a London Drugs contest since October 15, 2017; (ii) have reached the age of majority in the province in which they reside as at October 18, 2018 (iii) are not employees of London Drugs, their respective advertising and promotional agencies, the independent judging organization (if any), or any family member living with any such employee.
