Makeup Tips Every Spring Allergy Sufferer Needs to Know

Spring can be a frustrating time for seasonal allergy sufferers: watery eyes make your mascara run, your nose is constantly red from blowing your nose, and your skin feels irritated and puffy. While allergy medications can help to ease symptoms, there are also some easy ways to adjust your beauty routine during allergy season that will help to combat those tell-tale signs. Our Beauty Advisors recommend compiling your very own allergy survival kit with these beauty essentials, so you’re prepared when symptoms arise.

Skincare for Sensitive Skin

Before applying anything else to your face, start with skincare that will help to calm your irritated skin. Bioderma has a whole line of products for sensitive and redness-prone skin called Sensibio. Apply their Sensibio AR Anti-Redness Care cream to a clean face before makeup application to soothe the skin and prevent and reduce the intensity of blotchy redness. When taking off makeup at the end of the night, make sure to use their Sensibio H20 Micelle Solution, which is also formulated for sensitive skin.

De-Puffing Eye Cream

The all-natural instantly cooling formula of Youngblood’s Eye Impact Quick Recovery Eye Cream will be your new best friend, if puffy eyes are a side-effect of your seasonal allergies. Apply first thing in the morning, last thing at night or at any time during the day for an extra bit of soothing and de-puffing.

Waterproof Mascara

An ill-timed sneeze or watery eyes can cause mascara to smudge and run. If you don’t usually use a waterproof mascara, it’s time to switch! A waterproof formula like Almay’s One Coat Multi-Benefit Mascara in Waterproof Black will stay put all day, even if your allergy symptoms persist. Almay’s products are also gently formulated with pure, hypo allergenic ingredients and are ophthalmologist tested, so your eyes will be irritation-free.

Kohl Waterproof Eyeliner

It can be hard to avoid rubbing your eyes when they’re itchy and watery, and it can end up making your eyeliner look more like ‘raccoon eyes’. To stop the smudging, a waterproof eyeliner is a must. An even better option is a kohl eyeliner, like Annabelle’s Stay Sharp Waterproof Kohl Eyeliner. The kohl formula is ophthalmologist tested and safe for use in the waterline, plus is smudgeproof for up to 12 hours.

Colour Corrector

Sneezing and using tissues constantly can leave your nose raw and red. Before applying any concealer or foundation, use the green shade from NYX Cosmetics’ Colour Correcting Palette to target areas of redness on the face: it will effectively neutralize the red colour. If the redness has spread further than just your nose, consider switching from a clear primer to this Green Colour Correcting Liquid Primer from NYX, and apply all over the face.

Lip Repair

A stuffed up nose can cause you to breathe more through your mouth, which in turn can make your lips very dry and chapped. Keep a tube of RoC’s Enydrial Repairing Lip Care Balm on-hand to help protect and moisturize throughout the day. The balm is also formulated to minimise the risk of allergies, so your already sensitive lips won’t become further irritated.

Refreshing Mist

Instead of slathering on moisturizer throughout the day, use a refreshing mist like Youngblood’s Minerals in the Mist in Relax to soothe allergy flare-ups. The calming blend of lavender and vanilla infused with mineral nutrients and vitamins will refresh, protect and hydrate the skin for a healthy, radiant complexion.

Heat-Proofing Your Summer Make-up

The summer heat can take a toll, causing your make-up to melt away and your hair to frizz in the humidity. These beauty products, hand-picked by London Drugs Beauty Advisors, will help  keep your summer look fresh, even as the temperature climbs:

  1. Evian Brumisateur Facial Spray

This natural mineral water facial spray is the easiest way to moisturize and refresh your skin on-the-go. Throw it in your purse and give your face a quick spritz to keep your skin looking fresh: even in the hottest heat wave. ($14.00 at LondonDrugs.com)

  1. NYX Proof It! Waterproof Mascara Top Coat

The heat can melt your mascara, leaving dark shadows underneath your eyes. Instead of  foregoing your favourite regular mascara for a waterproof mascara, apply two swipes of the NYX Waterproof Mascara Top Coat. The top coat will make any  mascara waterproof. ($10.99 at LondonDrugs.com)

  1. NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray

Once you’re finished applying makeup, use this lightweight setting spray from NYX to make your makeup stay put. While it comes in both dewy finish and matte finish formulations, the matte finish setting spray is your best bet for fighting off shine during a heat wave. ($9.99 at LondonDrugs.com)

  1. Conair Infiniti Pro The Ultimate Brush

Heat and humidity can really do a number on your hair in the summertime, causing it to look frizzy. The Conair Ultimate Brush is powered with an anti-frizz ionic generator that releases ions directly into the hair to remove static and smooth the cuticle. The result is frizz free hair that’s beautifully shiny! The brush is wireless, which makes it perfect for tossing in your bag for frizz control on-the-go. ($39.99 at LondonDrugs.com)

  1. e.l.f. Studio Eye Primer & Liner Sealer

In the summer heat, eyeshadows crease more easily and eyeliners tend to smudge. Start off with the right eye make-up base by applying e.l.f. Studio Eye Primer to the eyelids; this will set your eyeshadow so it won’t bleed or crease. You can even turn your favourite eyeshadow into a waterproof, smudge-proof liquid liner with the built-in felt tip precision eyeliner brush! ($3.99 at LondonDrugs.com)

  1. Youngblood Luminous Crème Blush

To prevent the cakiness that can occur with powdered make-up, switch out your powder blush for a cream blush during summer. This cream-textured blush from Youngblood combines a shimmering glow with sheer, long-wearing colour that is perfect for outlasting the summer heat. The oil free formula even contains Vitamins C and E, Allantoin and Jojoba Esters that blend together to moisturize and protect the skin. ($32.00 at LondonDrugs.com)

  1. L’Oréal Colour Riche Balm with SPF 15

Opt for a lip tint in summer to give your lips a nice flushed colour that is more comfortable than sticky glosses or heavy lipsticks. As an added bonus, the L’Oréal Colour Rich Balm also has SPF 15 to help protect your lips while you’re out in the sun. ($9.99 at LondonDrugs.com)

  1. La Roche-Posay Hydreane BB Cream

When temperatures rise, it’s time to put aside the heavy foundations and try a lightweight BB cream instead. You’ll find it far more comfortable throughout the day, and this La Roche-Posay BB Cream will also help moisturize, soothe and protect your skin. Your complexion will look unified, even and fresh! ($29.00 at LondonDrugs.com)
