Sun Safety Tips to Know Before You Head Outside this Summer

Now that summer is officially here, you may be tempted to hit the pool, beach or a patio to soak up some of that summer sun. Before you do though, it’s important to make sure you’re protected from the sun’s harmful rays. In the video below, Patient Care Pharmacist Mike Athanassakis shares some helpful tips for sun safety and care, including why tanning really isn’t good for you, and how much sunscreen you should be applying.

Sun Safety Tips to Follow

Everyone needs to be proactive about protecting themselves from sun damage, by wearing sun-shielding clothing and sunglasses in addition to being cautious about the length of time spent in the sun, with frequent reapplications of sunscreen.

If your sunscreen is a cream, lotion, or gel, use at least 2 tablespoons of product. Regardless of what type you use, even a stick or a spray, make sure you apply sunscreen evenly to all areas of exposed skin. And apply a lip balm with sunscreen on your lips, too. Sunscreen naturally rubs off through perspiration and activity, so reapply at least every 3 to 4 hours, and after 40 minutes if you’ve been in the water.

In addition, try to stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm. The UV index in Canada can be 3 or higher during those times – the higher the index, the higher the risk of sun damage.

While applying sunscreen and staying out of the sun during peak times is a good start, there are several factors that still may be keeping you from adequately protecting yourself from severe sunburns or rashes, including sun-sensitizing medications, and inferior sunscreen products.

Misleading High SPF Values

SPF 50 Sunscreen

It’s not enough to simply be applying sunscreen. You should consider the efficacy of the sunscreen products you choose.

Two-thirds of sunscreen products offer inferior protection or contain worrisome ingredients, according to researchers at the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Their research found that claims of high SPF values are on the rise and can mislead people into thinking they are entirely protected from sunburns and long-term skin damage.

Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. However, don’t let a very high SPF value fool you – the SPF value on product labels only indicates the level of UVB protection, so it’s critical that you also look for the label ‘broad spectrum’. That will ensure you are protected from both harmful UVA and UVB rays. And look for the label ‘water resistant’.

Sunscreens with broad spectrum protection help prevent sunburns which can result from ultraviolet B rays, as well as shield the skin from possible melanoma and skin ageing which can result from ultraviolet A rays.

Sun-Sensitizing Medications

There are other factors to consider as well, like prescription medications, which can put you at high risk of sunburns or rashes while you’re out enjoying the sun.

Commonly-used prescription medications – including antibiotics such as tetracycline and ciprofloxacin, sulfa-containing drugs in some diabetes and heart medications, and acne treatments such as Accutane and Retin-A –can make the skin more vulnerable to sunlight, increasing the risk of sunburn, and in some cases, make the skin photosensitive. This photosensitivity can cause photoallergic or phototoxic reactions to the sun’s UV rays, in the form of painful and itchy rashes, or even blisters and sunburns.

Check with your pharmacist to find out if any of your medications could make your skin more prone to damage with increased exposure to the sun. If your pharmacist determines your medications are sun-sensitizing, they can provide advice to reduce your likelihood of a reaction.

#BestDayEver : A Home Cooked Meal at Canuck Place

Canuck Place #BestDayEver

At three months old, Kaitlin Sidhu was diagnosed with semilobal holoprosencephaly, a rare brain malformation that can result in muscle spasms, seizures, and deformities. On the heels of this devastating news was a cancer diagnosis, which meant baby Kaitlin spent most of the first three years of her life in hospital.

A devastating experience for any family. Parents, Amanda and Robert thought they’d exhausted their medical avenues. But then, they were introduced Dr. Hal Siden and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. “He came into the room, looked Kaitlin over and listened to everything she’d been through. He had some ideas of what we could do to reduce her pain and symptoms and we felt so relived there were options out there,” said mom, Amanda.

But, becoming part of Canuck Place was scary, “because it’s a hospice,” said Amanda. “Most people think ‘end of life.’” But that wasn’t Kaitlin’s case. Canuck Place could offer Kaitlin help with pain and symptom management and could provide her parents with much-needed respite.

“The best memory and feeling I have from my first experience with Canuck Place is that very first day we walked through the doors. It was an instant sense of relief. We were surrounded by a huge team who were there to look after our little girl, and our family.”

Like any home, the kitchen is central to Canuck Place. After months of eating hospital cafeteria food and pre-made Safeway meals the Sidhus were ready for some Canuck Place TLC. “I remember that first night we stayed at Canuck Place. It was amazing the spread that the kitchen and the chefs made for us.”

Kaitlin and her family’s first stay at Canuck Place was for six weeks. They never once worried about how to get breakfast, lunch or dinner. All those details were taken care of so that the family could focus on helping Kaitlin.

“I remember having a really bad day. A staff member knocked on my door with a full plate of my favourite cookies and it just made my day. It was amazing!”

Without Canuck Place in their lives, Amanda says her family may have fallen apart. Kaitlin had spent so much time in a hospital and Canuck Place was where the family could reunite and share time and space together. “Canuck Place saved our family, for sure.”

Something as small as a home-cooked meal can nourish the spirit. When was the last time you let someone do something special for you?

London Drugs is proud to be supporting Canuck Place by providing meals for the residents and families at the hospice. You can support Canuck Place families by visiting your local London Drugs* store and providing a donation during the month of July.

*BC Locations only.

Beauty Tips for Sensitive Skin & Allergy Sufferers

Irritated skin, a runny nose or itchy eyes are nothing to sneeze at. Especially when they make your face red and your mascara run. Thankfully, Tasha from The Open Journal is here to share her beauty tips for surviving allergy season and keeping your sensitive skin concerns at bay. Watch Tasha in the video below – or keep on scrolling to read more about her must-have products from London Drugs for managing skin sensitivity issues!

Clinique Redness Solutions Soothing Cleanser

If your skin is generally prone to redness or tends to flare up due to allergies, the right way to start your beauty routine is with a cleanser that will soothe the skin. Clinique has a Redness Solutions Soothing Cleanser that will do the trick. It’s a non-drying cream that will help to immediately improve visible redness, while melting away makeup and impurities. In general, Clinique products are always a good bet if you have sensitive skin. They’re dermatologist developed, allergy tested, and free of fragrances, parabens and phthalates!

Bioderma Sensibio Anti-Redness Care

As a second step in your skincare routine, consider switching to a moisturizer that will also work overtime to keep your redness concerns under control. Bioderma has formulated the Sensibio Anti-Redness Care to do just that – not only reducing redness but preventing it. It also makes an excellent base for your makeup.

Bioderma Sensibio Eye Contour

Allergies can make your eyes puffy and swollen, but Tasha has just the trick for that! First, she puts her Real Techniques Eye Reviver in the fridge for a few minutes to cool it down. Then she uses it to apply her Sensibio Eye Contour Gel from Bioderma. The cold helps to soothe the skin as the eye gel is applied, and then the eye gel will decongest, soothe, reduce puffiness – and an added bonus – minimizes wrinkles!

L’Oreal Magic Skin BB Cream

Red, blotchy skin can be frustrating, but L’Oreal’s Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream has an anti-redness formula that will do wonders. As the green-hued cream is blended into the skin, it neutralizes the look of redness, and transforms to a universal shade which evens skintone. The BB cream also works great as a spot treatment if your nose is particularly red from all that sneezing (oh the joys of allergy season).

Marcelle Kohl Eyeliner

If your eyes are particularly sensitive, or if allergies have them constantly watering, your go-to eyeliner should be a kohl liner from Marcelle. Their kohl liner is formulated specifically for the very sensitive waterline area: it’s 100% hypoallergenic, perfume-free and ophthalmologist tested. This particular pencil liner is also waterproof, so it won’t budge once applied.

La Roche-Posay Toleraine Volume Mascara

Sensitive eyes also deserve a mascara that’s specially formulated for them. La Roche-Posay’s Toleraine Volume Mascara has a special brush design that magnifies every lash without discomfort or irritation during application, protecting the eye contour. It’s also expertly formulated to be removed easily, so as to avoid any potential irritation.

Avène Care for Sensitive Lips

Even lips can feel sensitive and irritated. Luckily, there’s the Avène Care for Sensitive Lips. This rich, creamy lip balm features Avène’s Thermal Spring Water, which has properties that will help comfort and soothe your poor lips.

Avène Thermal Spring Water Spray

We saved Tasha’s best tip for last. Avène’s Thermal Spring Water Spray is an easy way to calm sensitive and irritated skin on-the-go. Just like their lip balm, the Thermal Spring Water offers soothing and softening properties to help relieve your skin issues. Just simply spray directly to the face (or any other part of the body). Because the Thermal Spring Water is captured directly at its source and bottled in a sterile environment, the spray is also safe to use on the eyes. It’s a perfect solution for irritated, itchy eyes that can result from allergies or other sensitivities!

Winter Photography Tips for Shooting Indoors

Stuck indoors this winter and frustrated about not being able to travel and snap some great photographs? While winters are the perfect time to cozy up indoors, it doesn’t mean that photography needs to take a back seat. We’ve got just what you need to embrace indoor photography and keep the shutterbug in you happy all winter long! From creative shooting ideas to tips on how to work with low lighting, our LDExperts in the Photolab are sharing everything you need to know to set up the perfect shot, in the comfort of your home!

Choosing the right location

When shooting indoors you have to explore your working space, as the best spot to shoot may be the last place you think of! While the living room often has the best lighting, the kitchen, front foyer, hallways, bedroom and even the bathroom may sometimes be a great place to experiment. Bathrooms usually have a lot of white and there are also mirrors which reflect the light, making it a great place to get creative. While taking shots in a mirror, make sure your reflection isn’t making a cameo. It can take some patience to get the angles and reflections, but it’s definitely worth it.

Play with the lighting

With the limited lighting available in winter, window light is just what you need to create the perfect ambience. Natural lighting doesn’t like competition though, and electric lights can affect your white balance. Look for spots that have patches of light coming in through the doors and windows and place your subject accordingly. Place your subject a foot or two away from the light source. This way you’ll make the best use of the natural light, and avoid the harsh contrasts that can be created by being too close to the window or door. It also helps to take note of what kind of light enters each room throughout the day.

You can also utilize light sources you would never have considered before such as computer and iPad lights, oven lights, night lights, torches and candles. What’s great about this is that you don’t necessarily have to be taking photos during the day – it can even be while reading bedtime stories to the kids! Just make sure you watch your white balance when dealing with artificial light.

Using reflective surfaces & blinds

When using natural light coming in through a window, you may find the issue of uneven lighting, which creates shadows on the subject. While this does look good in some instances, there’s also an easy fix for it. Use a piece of white poster board to bounce the light around and brighten up the side of the subject that isn’t facing the window. Mirrors are another great way to control lighting.

Blinds and curtains also help control the amount of light entering the room. If the sun is beaming directly into the room, the light can blow out your photos. Proper exposure and curtains can help soften that light.

Getting the best angle

Playing with angles helps with achieving different perspectives. You can shoot up close to capture details or further back to include environment for context. Shooting from different eye levels can also be explored – up high, down low, or over the shoulder, for example.

You can also play with the angle of your lighting. If the light is on your subject directly, it will create the most even lighting across them. Meanwhile, light coming in from the side at an angle creates some great shadows and depth. If your camera is facing the window with the sunlight at your subject’s back then make sure you’re exposing for your subject’s skin. Otherwise, your camera will read the light behind them and underexpose your subject.

Selecting the correct exposure

When shooting indoors, you will have to bump up the ISO to make the most of the ambient light. When your image is too dark when you take your photo, and you try to bring up the exposure in post processing, you end up introducing more grain and defeating your original purpose! Don’t underexpose your image for fear of bumping your ISO “too high”. Ensure your image is properly exposed, even if that means a slower shutter speed (within reason) or a higher ISO.

White Balance

Colour temperature plays an important role while shooting indoors. It works best to shoot in natural light, turning off lamps and overhead lighting. While correcting white balance is possible during editing, it is best to achieve as much as possible with your camera settings. Setting your camera to custom white balance and using a white wall usually does the trick.

So the next time you’re stuck indoors on a cold day, pick up your camera and gear to snap some great shots!  And once you’re done capturing those cozy new snapshots, you can simply visit our London Drugs Photolab website or upload your photos to the London Drugs Photolab App for iOS and Android. From there, you can select from multiple print options, like wall decor, prints and enlargements, mugs, coasters and even keychains.
