3 Ways to Care for your Face Mask

As face masks become an essential part of our daily routines, many have turned to reusable masks to be more cost effective and environmentally conscious. With that being said, it’s important to know how to take care of them, so that they can last longer and continue to help prevent the spread of germs. Keep reading below to learn tips on washing, drying and storing your face masks.

Washing your mask

The most important thing is to wash your face mask after every use, and investing in multiple masks makes it easy to have a fresh one ready at any time. An easy way to clean your used masks is to include it with your regular laundry load. It’s a good idea to use a cloth or mesh bag to avoid the ear loops from getting tangled with other clothes or garments. As well, make sure you use the warmest water temperature setting possible. If you choose to wash by hand, simply fill a bucket with hot water with detergent. Let your mask soak for 5 minutes, then use your hands to lather it up before rinsing it well.  TIP: Your regular detergent works fine but if you are sensitive to smells, you may want to switch to an unscented one!

Drying your mask

After washing, lay your mask flat to dry to allow it to maintain its shape. If possible, place it in a spot in direct sunlight. You can use a clothes hanger and clothes pins to hang multiple masks on to dry. TIP: Remember to wash your hands thoroughly after handling your face masks.

Storing your mask

When your face mask is not in use, store it in a cool, dry place. If you’re more of the forgetful type, try using hooks to hang your mask by the door so it is always in plain sight before you head out. When you remove your mask after use, place it in a paper lunch bag or plastic ziploc bag. If you don’t like the idea of using single use paper or plastic, you can always get yourself a Stasher bag. This reusable silicone bag comes in a variety of colours and is very easy to clean and sterilize!

Mask Filters

Face mask filters are much more delicate than reusable masks. The PM2.5 masks filters that you can find at London Drugs are not washable. If you are using them, remove it before washing your face mask. After your mask has completely dried, replace the PM2.5 filter with a new one after each use.

If you are choosing to go with reusable face masks, we hope you have found the tips above helpful. Don’t forget, you may want to have more than one reusable mask so you can rotate them during the week, ensuring you will always have a fresh one one hand! 4 hacks to make face mask wearing a little easier!

Wearing masks has become part of our every day new normal. We wear them commuting on transit, at work, to the grocery store, and even during social distancing gatherings with friends. And we’re sure you have come across a few issues that make wearing them daily a bit hard to adjust to! We’re here to list off a few solutions to some of the small-yet-annoying problems that have come along with mask wearing!

#1 – Foggy Glasses

If you’re a glasses wearer, there is nothing more annoying than having your glasses fog up right after putting on a mask. So how can you prevent this? Try tucking the mask underneath your glasses. If it’s a mask that has a wired rim, make sure to pinch it tight so that it fits snug against your nose and face.

You can also try folding a piece of tissue paper into a thin strip and using it to line the top of your mask, right above your nose. This will ensure a tighter fit so that air doesn’t escape to fog up your lenses.

Lastly, use some dish soap to clean your lenses. Make sure you use it on both sides of each lens. This leaves a transparent layer that prevents the temperature changes that cause fogging. BONUS: Your lenses also get a cleaning!

#2 – Improper Fit

Let’s face it, one mask is not going to fit everyone the same. So if you’re stuck with a mask that fits a bit looser than you had hoped, an easy solution is to simply crisscross the mask straps before looping them over your ears. This will ensure a tighter fit against your face.

#3 – Running out of Filters

It happens to the best of us; with your busy schedule, you forget to wash your mask filters and are now left without any clean ones. So what can you do? Cut a piece of paper towel in half and fold it so that it is in two layers. You can now slip it into your mask and use it as a filter! Dried baby wipes and coffee filters can also double as mask filter options.

#4 – Ear Pain

Wearing a mask constantly can eventually lead to ear pain, especially when the straps are looped around your ears. You can fix this by wearing it so that the mask straps wrap around your head instead. Simply attach one hair tie or elastic band to each mask strap. Secure the elastic bands together by looping each of them to a paper clip. London Drugs also sells mask extenders, which you can also use to secure your mask around your head.

Hopefully, you’re able to use one (or all!) of these hacks to solve those little daily annoyances that come with wearing a face mask. They can help make your day a little easier and a little more comfortable! If you are experiencing maskne from continued mask wearing, check out our blog with 4 ways to prevent and treat maskne. 4 Beauty Essentials to Indulge in for a Radiant Lunar New Year

1. Red Lips

What could be luckier than the perfect red lipstick? Found in beautiful, highly pigmented shades, our Beauty Advisors have hand-picked the best reds to complete your Lunar New Year look. An exciting new satin-finish red from Lise Watier, the Baiser Satin in Red Hot Kiss has the ultimate intense, rich finish that lipstick lovers dream of, and would make a beautiful statement for Lunar New Year.

If the on-trend matte lip is your finish of choice instead, NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Cream in Monte Carlo is a budget-friendly red that truly delivers. Of course, a classic silky smooth red is always a good choice, and Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipstick in Love that Red boasts mega-moisturizers to keep your pout looking flawless.

2. Bright Complexions

Luminous skin is a sure-fire way to start off your Lunar New Year beautifully. Our Beauty Advisors recommend a brightening cream like Strivectin’s Brighten & Perfect Radiance Refining Moisturizer to hydrate and enhance skin’s radiance. Or try the brand new White Lucent Brightening Protective Emulsion from Shiseido, a daytime moisturizer which brightens dull skin, focusing on environmental stressors like UV rays, air pollution and dryness.

For a highly powered solution to rapidly correct dark spots, uneven skin tone and brighten dull skin, NeoStrata’s SecureWhite Brightening Serum is a favourite amongst beauty bloggers.

3. Magnificent Masks

A pampering face mask is the perfect way to indulge in a New Year skincare routine! Providing some of the great benefits of a spa facial, face masks can draw out impurities, eliminate dead cells, or tighten and tone.

For a healthy looking glow that also minimizes the appearance of lines and wrinkles, Clarins’ Super Restorative Replenishing Comfort Mask is a must-try, according to our Beauty Advisors. If clogged and enlarged pores are also an issue, the Multi-‘Face’-eted All-in-One Anti-Aging Clay mask from Bliss will unclog pores while also reducing fine lines and brightening skin tone. A luxurious choice is Shiseido’s White Lucent Power Brightening Mask, which gives dull uneven skin a much-needed pick-me-up, in the form of a mess-free mask.

4. Precious Oils

The restorative powers of precious oils make them a special treat for your tired skin. Made from 100% pure plant extracts, the Clarins Lotus Face Treatment Oil is a natural astringent for oily or combination skin, and also soothes and seals in moisture to prevent fine lines, while refining the skin’s texture.

Our Beauty Advisors also recommend applying Biotherm’s Blue Therapy Serum in Oil at Night to plump the skin, increase luminosity, and smooth wrinkles; the formula has the efficacy of a serum, with the essential recovery power of an oil. For a pure, intensive dose of restoring Ceramides and essential lipids, try the potent Ceramide Capsules Daily Youth Restoring Serum from Elizabeth Arden. Each capsule helps to strengthen skin’s barrier against the visible signs of aging.
