Top 10 End of the School Year Gift Ideas

With the final days of school coming to an end for the summer, it may be time to start thinking about how you would like to document your school memories. For parents or students who are looking to thank their teachers or coaches with a year-end gift, photo gifts are a great way to document those memories. The London Drugs photolab has come up with some ideas to capture end of the school year moments for teacher mementos, sports teams, or even school fundraisers.

Cookbooks

cookboookFor those students who learned to cook and create their own recipes in home economics class, a class cookbook is a creative way to document your favourite class dishes. A year-end cookbook can be designed from a compilation of each student’s favourite recipe. Gift your teacher with a custom made cookbook, or create one for each student totake home. Don’t forget to create a customized place mat to go along with your favourite cookbook recipes!

Scrapbooks

scrapbooksFor students who may be transitioning from elementary school to high school or from high school to post secondary, memories of your past schooling can easily be documented in a scrapbook. These mini albums are perfect for sharing and will keep your memories safe for years to come.

Canvas Gallery Wraps

Canvas gallery wraps are the ultimate antidote for bare, lonely walls. Infinitely more personal than store-bought wall art and available in a huge range of sizes both square and rectangle, their striking colour reproduction draws viewers in and brings out the best of any image, scene or subject.

Essentially, a canvas gallery wrap is made using special inks on a fine art canvas, which is then wrapped around a wooden frame and thus doesn’t require an art frame. I’ve written extensively about canvas gallery wraps in the past (primarily this post) in case you’d like to learn more. Canvas is an excellent way to preserve the colour and contrast of the image, and as a surface it works for any type of photo including family portraits, scenic shots—heck, even pets!

Gallery wraps work well for anything from a small accent piece to the main focal piece of an entire wall. Sizes range from 9×9” to 40×60”. Just keep in mind, if you’re going big, you’ll need a high-resolution image. And of course, your local Photolab technician can advise you of such details, as well as anything else you’d like to know about gallery wraps or fine art prints.

May is Photo Month, so put your images on your wall.

Some photos simply deserve a better fate than confinement to a storage drive. Celebrate Photo Month by displaying them on your wall.

Some photos simply deserve a better fate than confinement to a storage drive. Celebrate Photo Month by displaying them on your wall.

May is Photo Month, and here at the London Drugs Photoblog we like to honour the occasion by encouraging you to not only take as many photos as you can, but to make the extra step of turning your best shot into prints—and then proudly displaying them in your home, your office, and wherever else you can.

Of course, I’m not just referring to regular enlargements—after all, you can never go wrong with quality London Drugs photo paper. However, the Photolab offers a number of art prints that can highlight the best features of any photo. No two images are like, and different surfaces can add textures and accentuate colour and contrast.

This month I’ll be reviewing three of the Photolab’s most impressive art print options: bamboo prints, canvas gallery wraps, and metal prints. If you’re an experienced photography vet, you’ll surely have a number of images that would be ideal for each option. If you’re new to photography, you’ll be able to grab your camera and shoot some amazing new images with a specific art print in mind. After all, true masters of photography don’t just shoot for the sake of capturing memories a moment; they consider how each image will be displayed as they compose the shot. There’s nothing stopping you from doing the same.

Happy Photo Month!

MEDICINE-WALKMedicine Walk by Richard Wagamese
When sixteen-year-old Franklin Starlight is called to visit his estranged father, Eldon, he finds him decimated after years of drinking. What ensues is a difficult journey through the rugged and starkly beautiful backcountry of the B.C. Interior and a vivid journey together into the past. Eldon relates to Frank the desolate moments in his life, and the times as well of happiness and hope, and he tells of sacrifices made in the name of love. In doing so, he offers his son a world the boy has never seen, a history he has never known. Richard Wagamese’s insight and compassion are matched by his remarkable gifts of storytelling and his ability to create characters that will live in our hearts long after the last page is turned.
