Coupon Policy Changes

Dear Couponers,

Due to unfortunate circumstances we are forced to announce a change to our approach of certain coupon stacking programs. This change will affect the pre-ordering of mass quantities of products and the use of mass cut coupons for all of our vendors for the purpose of coupon stacking. In addition, London Drugs has been advised by SC Johnson Company, that no SC Johnson coupon can be combined or stacked with any other coupon, regardless of the wording on the back of their coupons. Unfortunately, both of these areas are impacted due to increasing abuse which cannot be supported, and negatively affects all customers.

Pre-Ordering of Merchandise

Effective immediately, with those products where coupon stacking is permitted, London Drugs stores will only sell shelf quantities of product for the purposes of coupon stacking. As is a longstanding policy, we have always reserved the right to limit quantities and this will be enforced.

We have had increasing pressure from an ever widening number of coupon stackers to pre-order large quantities of products expressly for the purpose of coupon stacking. The requests are not modest: increasingly these order are for cases and half pallet or pallet quantities of merchandise. On top of this, it has been reported that increasingly these large quantities are used for resale, and not for personal consumption.

The manufacturers and London Drugs cannot support this excessive ordering of large quantities, as this is not what coupons were ever intended to provide for customers, and jeopardizes London Drugs ability to get reimbursed for coupons, causing potentially large financial losses for both London Drugs and its suppliers.

SC Johnson Company coupons

London Drugs has been advised by SC Johnson Company, that no SC Johnson coupon can be combined or stacked with any other coupon, regardless of the wording on the back of their coupons. London Drugs attempted to work with the legal counsel representing SC Johnson to alter their wording on their coupons as many other companies have done. Unfortunately, they have made a unilateral decision that because the abuse of coupon stacking has become too widespread on their products, they will not continue to reimburse London Drugs for any coupon they deemed was stacked.

London Drugs is very sorry that these practices have had to change. As one of the very few retailers that have allowed and supported coupon stacking, we’ve worked hard with coupon stacking forums and organizations to make policies clear, and prevent abuse. Despite this approach, the widening abuse has caused these changes in approach. It’s frustrating for London Drugs and the coupon customers who have worked responsibly to maintain the practice to date.

London Drugs helps raise over $150,000 for Pink Shirt Day 2012

Hundreds of thousands of Pink Shirt Day supporters across Canada donned their pink and committed to a bully free life on February 29th 2012 for the annual CKNW Pink Shirt Day campaign. In this 5th year of the Pink Shirt Day campaign, CKNW News Talk980 and the CKNW Orphans’ Fund sold 60,000 pink t-shirts and raised over $150,000 to support the Boys & Girls Clubs anti-bullying programs (picture included below).

“In 2007 when the campaign began at CKNW, a few hundred t-shirts were sold in support of Pink Shirt Day. We are thrilled to see this campaign grow to over 60,000 in 2012. Not only are we committed to raising money for organizations supporting anti-bullying, we are also focused on bringing about greater education and awareness to what bullying is,” said Tom Plasteras, Program Director for CKNW.

This year saw notable celebrities such as E-talk correspondent Elaine Lui (aka Lainey Gossip), David Booth of the Vancouver Canucks and Jay Demerit of the Vancouver Whitecaps rally behind the campaign through personal viral videos and messages supporting Pink Shirt Day involvement. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, proclaimed February 29th Pink Shirt Day in Vancouver and many other municipalities followed suit.

In the month of February, CKNW ran more than ten different segments focused on topics such as workplace bullying, school bullying, cyber bullying and how this type of behavior negatively impacts its victims. “We will continue to use our radio station and the CKNW Orphans’ Fund to bring much needed information to the public on this issue year round,” Plasteras added.

Pink Shirt Day T-Shirts were sold both online at PinkShirtDay.ca and through London Drugs retail outlets in Western Canada. To date, the CKNW Orphans’ Fund and radio station CKNW have raised over $375,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs in support of their anti-bullying programs.

“The Boys and Girls Clubs are grateful for the support from the CKNW Orphans’ Fund through the Pink Shirt Day Campaign, which is critical to helping us ensure that each and every one of the 10,000 children, youth and their families we serve annually have opportunity to participate in our programs,” said Carolyn Tuckwell, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC. “A key element of our program is to develop healthy, positive relationships, and BGC’s anti-bullying programs are the cornerstone of that learning”.

London Drugs wireless pin pads raise over $2000 for the Salvation Army

London Drugs presented a donation of $2362.70 to The Salvation Army, British Columbia division. The total was collected from wireless pin pads that were given to The Salvation Army during their Christmas Kettle Campaign in 2011. Kettle workers stationed at two of London Drugs largest locations, Broadway and Cambie in Vancouver and Lonsdale Ave in North Vancouver gave passerby and customers the ability to make a donation to the Salvation Army using their debit and credit cards.

The Salvation Army provides much needed food, clothing and social support to thousands of individuals and families throughout the year. In addition to the pin pads, London Drugs accepted donations at the cashiers at all 34 of its Lower Mainland stores, with donations going directly to those citizens living in the communities where the donations were made.

In attendance at the cheque presentation were Major Brian Venables, divisional secretary for public relations and development Salvation Army, and Dave Woogman, London Drugs Cambie and Broadway store manager.

London Drugs is excited to partner with the Rick Hansen Foundation during its 25th Anniversary Relay across Canada!

Twenty-five years ago Rick Hansen wheeled through 34 countries to complete the Man In Motion World Tour.  Since then, he and his team have been working tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for the Rick Hansen Foundation, which supports spinal cord injury research and helps build accessible communities for all. Now, to commemorate the original Tour and celebrate the accomplishments of Canadians who are making a difference in their communities, the Rick Hansen Foundation is re-tracing the Canadian portion of Rick’s original journey.
The Foundation supports the two big dreams of Rick’s original Tour – the search for a cure for paralysis after spinal cord injury, and building accessible and inclusive communities.

Get in the Pink—Pink Shirt Day Feb. 29!

Five years ago, two grade twelve boys from Nova Scotia stood up for a younger boy who was being bullied for wearing the colour pink. They encouraged their schoolmates to wear pink and send a message against bullying. CKNW heard of the story and started running editorial dedicated to anti-bullying. Over time, this became a movement. Its goal is to discourage bullying by encouraging the wearing of the colour pink, and today we all know it as Pink Shirt Day.

2012 is the fifth year for Pink Shirt Day (PinkShirtDay.ca), which will be held on Wednesday, February 29. This is London Drugs’ fourth year of participation, and all locations will be selling pink shirts and buttons to raise awareness and funds for anti-bullying programs supported by the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast B.C. as well as the CKNW Orphan’s Fund.

Shirts are available at all
London Drugs locations
Last year, net proceeds of shirt sales at London Drugs totalled $75,000. This year we want to contribute even more, and hope to spread the word even farther that “Bullying stops here.”

Some facts about bullying:

  • Bullying happens to someone in Canada every 7 minutes on the playground (bullying.org)
  • 50% of Canadian school children report being bullied and 45% of children surveyed do not feel safe when they go to school (Bullying Study, University of Guelph)
  • Bullying can affect all ages—35% of workers have experienced worplace bullying first hand
  • Children who are bullied are at risk for imparied social development, mental and physical illnesses, suicide and school absenteeism
So dig out your pink shirts, pants or socks and have them ready for February 29th. Or visit a London Drugs store for the official Pink Shirt Day t-shirts or buttons. We’ll be rallying on our Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/LondonDrugs) and on Twitter (www.twitter.com/LondonDrugs) so follow us there for more information.

Couponing at London Drugs

Dear Couponer,

We understand your need to save and stretch your dollars and our coupon stacking program is a great way for us to help with that. Up to now we have been able to support and make this happen. However, we are facing tremendous pressure from manufacturers and we are at risk of losing the stacking program all together. Please help us maintain this program by following these guidelines.

  1. Respect our legal and ethical responsibility to ensure coupons are accepted properly. Our cashiers have both an ethical and legal responsibility to ensure that coupons are accepted as outlined on each coupon. If you present a coupon that is not eligible for stacking or that cannot be accepted, know that this is not a result of London Drugs being inconsistent in acceptance, but that we are living up to our legal responsibility to accept coupons as per the manufacturers terms and conditions. We cannot and will not tolerate customers who bully or try to intimidate our cashiers into taking coupons. Our cashiers know our policies. Please respect their need to enforce them.
  2. Read the back of each coupon carefully. We have an excellent relationship with our manufacturers and ensure coupons are accepted as they have outlined on the back of each coupon. We are open with manufacturers that when there is doubt on how the coupon wording is crafted, we will interpret on behalf of our customers.
  3. Understand vendor stacking policies can be different than our store policies. Many Manufacturers continue to change the language on the coupons in an effort to restrict stacking. This affects our ability to stack coupons – but it is not a change in our policy.
  4. Be considerate of other customers. We are proud that London Drugs provides an excellent opportunity for couponers to save money but we are equally proud of the shopping experience and service we routinely provide to our customers. Help us serve your needs better by choosing to make your coupon stacking trips to our stores during non-peak hours or discuss with your store manager in advance to ensure the best experience for all.

We welcome you to continue to realize savings through our current couponing practices. Know that the future of our coupon program at London Drugs is highly dependent on your willingness to help us meet our ethical and legal responsibilities to our staff, customers and manufacturers. Please help us share this with the coupon community.

Thank you once again for your support.
