Spirit of Giving holiday donation drive aims to collect The Mustard Seed’s urgently needed items

spiritofgiving

Donations are being accepted at all London Drugs locations in Calgary until December 24, 2016.

With fewer supporters able to give what they would normally contribute this year, combined with the significant decrease in donations last year, The Mustard Seed has been left scrambling to keep up with the growing needs of homeless men and women in Calgary.

“Donations during the holidays usually replenish us for the majority of the year. But last year we didn’t receive as much as we normally do and this year donations are down again. The shortage is compounded by the fact that we we’re seeing more people seeking help at our emergency shelters. When a guest arrives and we are out of things like underwear or toothbrushes, it causes frustration and pain. It can add to their feelings of hopelessness especially over the holidays which is a particularly tough time of year for people living in poverty,” says Trudi Marx, Sorting Centre Coordinator with The Mustard Seed who works on the front lines to stock the organization’s emergency shelters.

To help meet the increasing demand, London Drugs is supporting the Spirit of Giving holiday donation drive to collect the items The Mustard Seed needs most; things like thermal socks, toques, scarves, gloves and underwear; hygiene items like toothbrushes, deodorant and disposable razors; and supplies for food hampers. All donations will be received and distributed by The Mustard Seed to help give hope to those experiencing poverty and homelessness.

“It’s humbling to realize that the little things – the small acts of kindness – can help turn a life around. Together with the generosity of our staff and our customers, we can come together and show that we care. That’s what the spirit of giving is all about,” says Brady Dolan, Store Manager at the new London Drugs location in Sage Hill in Calgary.

London Drugs Helps Make the Holidays Happier for Seniors

In December 2015, London Drugs in Edmonton partnered with Operation Friendship Seniors Society to provide personalized gifts for 40 of the Society’s seniors.

In less than three weeks, thousands of items were donated, wrapped and delivered by Santa and his elves for the 350 residents of Operation Friendship Seniors Society, with another 150+ packages provided for the Society’s drop-in centre.

“We are so grateful to be part of this program with London Drugs for the first time,” said Jimmy Morrison, Community Relations Supervisor with Operation Friendship Seniors Society. “Many of our residents do not have family or loved ones they can celebrate the holidays with, so this small gesture will mean so much to many. We are thankful to the community for any support they can provide to us, especially during the holidays, and look forward to expanding this program with London Drugs in the future.”

Thank you to our customers in the Edmonton area for supporting Edmonton inner city seniors. If you would like to help a senior in your area, here are the top 10 most popular gifts from the Society’s wish lists.

The Best Way to Get Into the Christmas Spirit: Giving Back

London Drugs partnered with Airdrie Angel to make this holiday season a bit brighter for families who have fallen on hard times due to illness, financials difficulties and other trying circumstances.

“This is a really hard time of year for a lot of families and it’s really important that we support however we can,” says Colleen Lancaster, Store Manager at London Drugs in Airdrie.

Staff from her store and a group of volunteers from The Carre Group surprised families with everything from a Christmas tree and decorations to stockings and stuffers and gifts for the entire family.

“What a day like this does for all of us is to make us appreciate what we have and how we can share with others,” says Lancaster.

Airdrie Angel founder, Matt Carre, adds, “It’s about giving a lift to the spirit. This is exactly what Christmas is all about.”
