When we think about cultural hotspots, cities like Montreal, Portland, and NYC typically come to mind. While Nelson, Ucluelet, and Kelowna may not boast the same name recognition, they’re local and offer a similar cool factor without breaking the bank.
From vibrant art communities and centuries-old architecture to unique dining experiences and killer views – these small BC “it” cities pack a bigger punch than you might expect. So if you’re craving a dose of culture – and the open road – (grab some travel insurance!) and pack your bags for a scenic drive to one of these hip BC getaways.
Nelson
Dubbed the “prettiest small town in Canada” by The New York Times, Nelson is perched between the Selkirk Mountains and the West Arm of the Kootenay Lake. Ask anyone who’s been: the 8 hour drive from Vancouver is one of the most stunning in British Columbia. On your way, make a pitstop at Christina Lake, one of the warmest lakes in the province and a haven for water activities. Nelson’s natural beauty serves as the ideal backdrop for its thriving arts community; you can find work from local artists on display in most cafes and businesses.
See: Soak up Nelson’s culture and history at Touchstones Nelson Museum of Art and History – the granite, marble and pink brick building is a work of art in itself.
Do: Indulge in over many blends of artisanal coffee and stroll down historic Baker Street.
Eat: Splurge on locally sourced seafood or get a taste of authentic Indian food.
Ucluelet
Ucluelet is a coastal paradise steeped in First Nations history and an eclectic mix of cultural activities. It’s a quieter, less-touristy alternative to neighbouring Tofino, which is just 40 minutes away by car. You don’t really need a plan when you come to “Ukee” – the locals famously embrace visitors and are quick to suggest things to see, do and eat in their beloved town. Whether you’re a foodie, an art lover or an outdoor explorer– Ucluelet offers something for everyone in a laid-back, West Coast package.
See: Stroll along the Wild Pacific Trail and check out the historic Amphitrite Point Lighthouse. Spend an afternoon at the Mark Penny Gallery for a well-curated selection of local and international paintings, photography and sculpture.
Do: Enjoy live entertainment, fresh local produce and artisanal goods at the Ukee Friday Night Market. Get up close and personal with local marine life at the Ucluelet Aquarium.
Eat: Start with a home-style brunch and then start seeking top-notch Pacific West Coast cuisine (read: local seafood!).
Kelowna
It’s no secret that Kelowna is a popular destination for great wine; beyond the grapevine, this lakeside city is an established cultural hub with a wide range of festivals, markets, concerts, galleries and more. Known as the Silicon Valley of the North, Kelowna’s booming tech industry has attracted a young, creative crowd that further nourishes the city’s vibrant communities. Just a 4 hour drive from Vancouver, Kelowna is well within reach for a weekend getaway.
See: Feast your eyes on The Mission Hill Family Estate Winery, a 120,000 square foot architectural marvel designed by Olsen Kundig Architects. While you’re there, check out the Summer Concert Series held at the winery’s incredible outdoor amphitheatre.
Do: Attend the Center of Gravity Festival for 3 action-packed days of sports and electronic music on the Okanagan Lake. Take a self-guided walking tour of Kelowna’s Cultural District, home to one of a kind galleries, restaurants, and boutiques.
Eat: Try some of the fantastic locally-focused cuisine, thanks to all the farms and orchards. Thai food is also a local favourite, so take the opportunity to indulge in some sweet and spicy curries.
We can’t wait to get this culture crawl on the road. Now that you have a few destinations in mind, take care of the essentials: insurance and a rockin’ playlist to complement your epic journey.
