How to Donate to Your Local Food Bank

Over 850,000 Canadians use a food bank at least once a month. Reach out a hand to the hungry this year with our get-started guide:

  1. Get nutritious: Think high-protein goods like canned tuna, beans and nut butters, and vitamin-packed low-sugar tinned fruit, applesauce and veggie soups. Low-sugar cereals and granola bars are also welcome.
  2. Be practical: Pop-top tins are easy to open and eat without kitchen facilities. Remember that toilet paper, toothbrushes and feminine hygiene products are also often desperately needed.
  3. Treats welcome: Chocolate bars, pretzels and boxed sweets are thoughtful additions for the holiday season.
  4. Consult an expert: Contact your local food bank (here are links for Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton) to check what’s most needed in your area.

Residents across B.C. are invited to play Santa this year for local seniors

London Drugs partners with the “Home Instead Senior Care” for the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program

This Christmas, many seniors who may live in isolation will get the opportunity to experience some holiday cheer. London Drugs is happy to support the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program put on by “Home Instead Senior Care”. Customers of London Drugs will get the opportunity to play the role of Santa this year by giving Christmas gifts to their local seniors.

As part of their holiday shopping, London Drugs customers can select a “Home Instead Senior Care” resident nametag from the store’s Christmas tree. Each nametag features an item selected by a senior from the community. Trees will be in participating stores until all tags have been collected at the stores or until December 12th. In the spirit of Christmas, Home Instead will deliver presents to the “Home Instead Senior Care” residence to be opened on Christmas morning.

“During the Christmas season, it is important to spread the act of giving and helping each other,” said Darryl Galick, London Drugs store manager in Victoria. “We are happy to support this initiative where seniors from the Home Instead Senior Care program experience a joyful Christmas.”

Participating London Drugs stores for the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program are:

  • London Drugs, 2111 Main Street, Penticton
  • London Drugs, 1950 Harvey Avenue, Kelowna
  • London Drugs, 2151 Louie Drive, Westbank
  • London Drugs 911 Yates St, Victoria
  • London Drugs 3170 Tillicum Rd, Victoria
  • London Drugs 555 Sixth Street, New Westminster
  • London Drugs Coquitlam Centre 2929 Barnet Highway, Coquitlam

In order to include the family and friends of the seniors, there will also be a corresponding Christmas tree located at the “Home Instead Senior Care” office in each city to ensure visitors to the facility can also participate.

London Drugs Partners with the Salvation Army for Annual Christmas Campaign

Salvation-Army-Christmas-fill-the-kettle

As The Salvation Army welcomes the Annual Christmas tradition of ringing bells around the city for the 124th year, we are grateful to London Drugs for the continual support they provide to the Christmas campaign.

Each year, The Salvation Army relies on the support of corporate partners such as London Drugs who not only allow Christmas Kettles to be placed at their stores each year, but provide the opportunity for customers to give directly at the till in all London Drug stores.

The campaign enables local Salvation Army units to work with individuals and families to provide them with basic necessities such as food, clothing, shelter and other provisions.

The Salvation Army has provided hope and dignity for more than 130 years through the generosity of donors and volunteers. Hosted at more than 2,000 locations across Canada, the annual Christmas Kettle Campaign is the organization’s largest fundraising drive of the year and would not be possible without great partners like London Drugs.

“Every year we are amazed and truly thankful for the generosity of our friends, families and neighbours who help The Salvation Army in its war against poverty,” shared Commissioner Susan McMillan, Commissioner for The Salvation Army Canada & Bermuda.

Beyond donating to The Salvation Army’s physical Christmas Kettles, donations to the 2014 Christmas Campaign can be made at www.FilltheKettle.com, www.SalvationArmy.ca/britishcolumbia, by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY (725-2769) or via mail to The Salvation Army, 2 Overlea Blvd, Toronto, ON M4H 1P4.

Seventh Annual Toys 4 Teens Holiday Campaign Launches

London Drugs, Jack FM Radio and 660 News Partner to Collect Gifts for Forgotten 10 to 17-year-olds in Calgary

Every year, many parents or guardians struggle to afford gifts for their children during the holidays. While toy drives are making a big difference in the lives of many of these children, the amount of gifts donated for tweens and teens falls short of the demand.

London Drugs has partnered with Jack FM Radio Calgary and 660 News Calgary to support donations of gifts for young people between the ages of 10 and 17 for the seventh annual Toys 4 Teens holiday campaign. The campaign is part of the Salvation Army’s Family Christmas Assistance Program, which aims to put Christmas gifts in the hands of those less fortunate throughout Calgary.

Millionaire House with a View, for a good cause

photo-2Our team visited White Rock, BC recently to tour the beautiful two-story house that is one of the grand prizes for the Millionaire Designer Home Lottery. London Drugs has been a proud supporter of the popular Millionaire Designer Home Lottery for the past 19 years and customers can purchase tickets at any of our locations. Since its inception, more than 60 million has been raised for the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, helping more than 200,000 people.

“We are very fortunate to have the support of the Millionaire Designer Home Lottery for almost two decades,” said VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Senior Vice President, Brian Dowling, who was in attendance at a special media unveiling on Thursday. “Almost every area providing critical patient care at Vancouver General Hospital has equipment that has been funded by this lottery. Funds raised significantly improve the quality of care for patients and families. We thank everyone who has purchased tickets for past lotteries and thank those in advance who will be buying tickets for this lottery.”

The VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation uses the funds raised for VGH, UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute and Vancouver Community Health Services. VGH is also BC’s only accredited Level 1 Trauma Centre and, together with UBC Hospital and GF Strong, it is the province’s main referral centre. Most recently, funds went towards purchasing a new bus for a senior living facility because their old one broke down. A bus means a lot to the seniors as it allows them to go out and about around the city.

Watch this short video about the Foundation here.

Right now until tonight at midnight, if you purchase a Millionaire Designer Home Lottery ticket, you are eligible for the Fall VIP Bonus, which includes a $25,000 luxury vacation from Kiwi Collection, spending cash, or a Toyota Camry Hybrid plus spending cash.

photo-1You can also tour the Oceanview Home in White Rock daily, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 15574 Pacific Avenue. The property boasts 14-foot ceilings and breathtaking views of Semiahmoo Bay, Mount Baker, and more. It is definitely worth a visit. And, the winner will also receive a new 2014 BMW i3 with the package.
