This month we are reviewing Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts
Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts
An escaped convict with a false passport who flees maximum security prison in Australia for the teeming streets of a city where he can disappear. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, the two enter Bombay’s hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, soldiers and actors, and Indians and exiles from other countries, who seek in this remarkable place what they cannot find elsewhere. As a hunted man without a home, family, or identity, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city’s poorest slums, and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia.
Reviews
“I cannot speak highly enough of Shantaram, a beautifully written, epic story. It’s one of those novels you just devour, but at the same time you know you should slow down and savour it. I found myself re-reading some passages twice, because the language and imagery was just so brilliant. I highly recommend it”. – Review by Melissa

Shantaram is available at London Drugs along with many other great titles and is on sale for the month of September.
Absolutely one of my favourite books ever…and soon to become a movie after much delay. Read the book first though as there is no way in this life that a movie could come close to the brilliance of this novel. It closely follows Roberts’ own life, with a little literary licence, which makes it all the more fascinating.
