Fire Prevention Month – Protect your Family from Fire

London Drugs offers Canada’s best smoke and carbon monoxide technology from Kidde to help keep your family safe

On average, residential fires kill six people each week in Canada. And research shows that most families could be doing more to stay safe.

The Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs reminds us all that Fire Prevention Month (Oct 1-31) is a perfect time to assess your family’s fire readiness and make changes that can help you escape alive if you are ever threatened by fire or carbon monoxide.

Fire Safety
– Install a smoke alarm on every storey of your home and outside sleeping areas. If you sleep with the doors closed, install alarms right in the bedroom.
– Change smoke alarm batteries at least once per year.
– Replace any smoke alarm that is more than 10 years old whether battery operated or hardwired into your home’s electrical system.
– Never tamper with a smoke alarm by removing the batteries or taking it off the ceiling due to a false alarm when you burn the toast.
– Purchase an alarm with a “Hush” button that allows you to silence false alarms as the smoke or steam clears, while still staying safe in case a real fire breaks out.
– Create and practise a fire escape plan with your kids each year.

Carbon Monoxide Safety
– CO is called the “Silent Killer” because it cannot be detected by humans. It is colourless, odorless and tasteless.
– Become familiar with sources of CO in your home: gas water heaters; gas appliances; wood and gas fireplaces; furnaces; and garages or carports where automobile exhaust is present.
– The ONLY way to be protected from CO is by installing CSA-approved carbon monoxide alarms on every storey of your home and especially outside bedrooms.
– Install fresh batteries at least once per year whether battery operated or plug-in models with battery back-up.
– Replace any CO alarm that is more than 5-7 years old whether battery operated, plug-in, or hardwired into your home’s electrical system.

Remember: Families that learn about fire and CO safety and prevention together reduce their risk of experiencing a devastating tragedy. If a smoke or CO alarm goes off, every member of the family must know what to do and where to go.
