I’m wearing pink today!

Well, today I’m wearing pink with purpose—the fifth annual PinkShirtDay.ca.
Think pink today.
Five years ago two grade twelve boys from Nova Scotia stood up for a younger boy who was being bullied for wearing the colour pink. They encouraged their schoolmates to wear pink and send a message against bullying.

Here are some sad facts about bullying from an earlier blog post:

  • Bullying happens to someone in Canada every 7 minutes on the playground (bullying.org)50% of Canadian school children report being bullied and 45% of children surveyed do not feel safe when they go to school (Bullying Study, University of Guelph)
  • Bullying can affect all ages—35% of workers have experienced workplace bullying first hand
  • Children who are bullied are at risk for impaired social development, mental and physical illnesses, suicide and school absenteeism
If you’re wearing pink too, way to go! Header over to the London Drugs Facebook Page, and let us know.

Healthy Kids—Physical Activity

From the Public Health Agency of Canada
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), kids need 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Studies show that the younger a child learns the habit of being active, the more likely they are to retain that as a lifestyle trait into adulthood.

When kids keep physically active, they realize many more benefits than just improved fitness. Other health rewards are:

  • Stronger bones and healthier muscles
  • Stronger heart
  • Better posture and balance
  • Healthy growth and development
  • Increased concentration
  • Better academic scores
  • Improved self-esteem

What are some activities for kids?

Kids should combine vigorous-intensity activities as well as activities that stimulate muscle and bone. Some of the simplest ideas are

  • Encourage walking to school and getting active as a family
  • Ask them to walk the dog with you
  • Park farther away from the grocery store or mall entrance when you run errands
  • Replace computer and TV time with something active
  • Find drop in community centers and learn a new sport or activity

The 2011 Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines can be found at the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology’s website (http://www.csep.ca/english/view.asp?x=804). An updated guide will next be released in Spring of 2012.

How to make washing up fun & natural!

The Fun Stuff!

We all know how difficult it can be to get kids in the habit of washing up – but bath time doesn’t always have to be a chore! It is important to teach your children about the importance of personal hygiene, so why not make it a fun part of their daily routine?

Try incorporating music into your child’s personal care routine. Many of their favourite songs can be used as a guide for how long it should take them to wash up. Singing the alphabet twice is a great way to ensure that a child is brushing their teeth thoroughly (just make sure to sing in your head while you brush!). Don’t forget to remind them that all of their teeth need brushing, even the ones way in the back! You can also sing “Happy Birthday” out loud while washing hands (for about 30 seconds) to make sure they’re squeaky clean. Another favourite song is “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”, which is perfect for bath time. As you sing together, have your child wash each body part mentioned.

Natural ingredients are important

Did you know that children can absorb up to 200% more substances through their skin than adults? (Princeton Journal – Future of Children). Many bath products currently on the market for children can contain suspect ingredients.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics ran a study to evaluate popular children’s bath products for Formaldehyde and 1,4-Dioxane (probable cancer causing agents). 82% of them contained Formaldehyde, 67% contained 1,4-Dioxane and 61% contained both! These particular ingredients probably won’t show up in a products ingredient listing because they’re byproducts of other ingredient manufacturing (like Sodium Laureth Sulphate or PEGs). However it is still very important to read ingredient labels and choose products that use natural, safe, gentle ingredients.

At Nature Clean® we have families too! It was important for us to introduce a line of natural, gentle personal care products for kids that are safe for delicate skin and that they’ll love to use!
That’s why we are so proud of the Treehouse™ children’s personal care line by Nature Clean®!

These pure and safe bath time products for kids not only offer the natural trusted formulations you’d expect from Nature Clean®, but they are also very mild and are gentle enough for babies. These 99.5% natural formulas are derived from plant and mineral sources. Additionally, the entire line has been created without ingredients such as sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), sodium lauryl ether sulphate/sodium laureth sulphate (SLES), propylene glycol (PEG), parabens, petroleum ingredients, synthetic perfumes, and dyes.

The line is not only natural and gentle, but fun too! The packaging features children’s favorite characters and uses natural fruit flavorings for great fruity scents to help encourage kids that bath time can be as fun as playing outside in the mud… we think it could happen! With easy to use flip caps and pumps, kids can wash their hands, clean their hair, brush their teeth, and take a bath all by themselves (please note that children should never be left in a bath alone – adult supervision is always required).

The line includes 2in1 Shampoo, Body Wash, Bubble Bath, Toothpaste, Foaming Hand Soap and more! Click here to learn more.

The key to making personal hygiene fun for your child is to encourage them to be independent when washing up and to avoid making it a chore. With kid-friendly products and a positive attitude, getting clean can be fun for all the members of your family!
