London Drugs customers have generously donated more than $45,000 towards the Red Cross Typhoon Haiyan Fund through cashier tills at all of our 78 store locations.
The Canadian Red Cross field hospital and staff are set up in the heavily damaged island of Leyte working to ensure essential health needs of more than 100,000 people are met. This includes surgical, pharmacy, maternity, pediatric services and psychosocial support.
As we read in this latest dispatch, the field hospital remains at 100% capacity, and “if it was easy, someone else would have done it.”
The Government of Canada has extended its program to match dollar-for-dollar eligible donations by individuals until December 23rd, 2013. London Drugs will continue accepting at-till donations for the Red Cross relief efforts at all 78 London Drugs stores.
Typhoon Haiyan ravaged six central Philippine islands on Friday. It is one of the strongest storms to ever make landfall. The true scale of devastation has yet to emerge as communications and transportation links have been shattered, however it is clear that the country is in dire need of help to support rescue, emergency medical assistance and provide basic necessitates to the more than 9.5 million people affected.
As many may know, major flooding began in Southern Alberta on Thursday, June 21st shocking everyone. It was quick and ferocious. London Drugs instituted relief support for the Canadian Red Cross the following morning, June 22nd, and now nearly three weeks later, it is our biggest donation drive ever, with customers having donated $50,000 in support of the Red Cross’ relief efforts. The recent floods in southern Alberta displaced thousands of people from their homes and businesses, and many people have lost everything they own.
As media are allowed to go into the impacted areas and capture the aftermath and devastation, it is shocking to see how widespread the floods have damaged – and in some cases washed away – family homes, vehicles and neighbourhoods.
Calgary and southern Albertans have shown great courage and strength amidst this natural disaster.
We applaud all of the heroes who have stepped up with support and the willingness to do whatever is necessary to lend a helping hand.
