Guy Brows - A low-maintenance guide to gorgeous

So, you're an average dude, bombarded with images, whispers and mysterious words about manscaping - and to be honest you barely know what most of it means. Or, more importantly, what it means to you. Here’s the Waxing Guru, from Parissa Labs (the only waxing company to develop a brow groomer just for men), speaking the truth about fixing the furry forehead.

Let’s establish first who we're talking about here. The industry standard if you will, for the guy who doesn't want to log much time in the bathroom, but who also wants to be making sexy eye-contact on a regular basis. You're a step above washing your hair with bar soap yet still using your razor to split your one eyebrow into two. And you're reading enough men’s magazines to know that when you look at your face in the mirror, you realize a little housekeeping is in order.

Alright handsome – here’s what you need to know about fore-hedge trimming your Eyebrows:
  • Lift & separate. Tame the Renegades - using an old toothbrush or comb, brush brows straight upward, anything longer than about 1/2" should be carefully trimmed with scissors. You'll need to do this roughly once/month. It's easy to do, and you can pick up a small pair at London drugs for about $12. They'll come in handy as you age, believe me.
  • Two brows are better than one - Run your finger along the bridge of your nose up to your forehead, any brow hairs that cross this path should be removed. Also, it’s a good idea to stand back away from the mirror and take a good look – check to see if they are even, look for excess fine hairs that grow outward toward the temple or hairline causing dark shadow, and whether enough light able to get past them and into your eyes to make them sparkle.
  • Options: Shaving - cheap, but very dangerous and way too easy to muck it up. Tweezing - cheap - but can be a little time consuming and irritating. It's worth it to spend a couple extra bucks for stainless steel tweezers that will last. It's worth investing in good ones. Tweezerman is a name you can trust and you can also grab those at London Drugs. Salon/waxing - you'll walk out looking polished and sculpted. If you're nervous about doing it yourself, this is the way to go. Be sure to ask questions, and you may discover some techniques for doing it yourself in the privacy of your own home next time. You will need to make an appointment and it will cost you anywhere from $15 - $30+ / month. Home/waxing – The best way to go, in my opinion. Very easy to do, and will cost you a fraction of a salon visit. For a simple and fast option, choose Parissa Brow Groomer for men. These pre-waxed strips are super easy to use and get the job done – fast!. Just press on and peel off. You'll get the hang of it in the first go. A kit will run you about $9 at London Drugs and last you about a year (that's less than a dollar a month).
Parissa makes the Men’s Brow Groomer, express wax strips especially for you guys. The advantage of waxing is that it lasts for weeks, the wax strip is transparent – so you can see exactly what you are doing, and they come with detailed photo instructions as well as a 24-hours careline for you to call for consultation and questions. Here’s a super fast how-to video for Quick and easy Gorgeous Guy-Brows
  • Aftercare. Once you’ve finished, make sure to soothe and clean your skin with azulene oil (included in your brow kit). Do not use soaps or astringents. Your skin may be a little pink or tender so I suggest doing it before you go to bed at night.
Most importantly: Get Gazing! Well groomed facial hair is a very attractive feature, and if your eyes are the windows to your soul, then lets frame those windows nicely, shall we?

You Can Make This a Green Christmas

Dave Woogman shows the type of Styrofoam packaging included in London Drugs' recycling program.

metro - Santa Claus is about to begin delivering toys to all the girls and boys, but along with all those presents come a tonne of wrapping paper, bows and all sorts of packaging.

While sparkly holiday decorations are pretty, the Recycling Council of British Columbia (RCBC) recommends shoppers think environmentally when buying this year.

“Before purchasing a product, gift or any wrapping, check whether or not it can be recycled,” says Harvinder Gill of RCBC. “Items like 100 per cent paper wrapping or Chinese cloth-wrapping techniques are great ideas.”

For more difficult items, like Styrofoam, Gill recommends taking advantage of retailer recycling programs such as Bring Back the Pack offered by London Drugs.

“We encourage people to bring back the cardboard, Styrofoam packaging and the receipt from any product we sell, and we’ll recycle them,” says Dave Woogman, manager of the London Drugs store at Broadway and Cambie.

Recycling tips
Dos and don’ts of Christmas decorations:

Don’t

  • Buy items that can’t be recycled, such as tinsel or embossed wrapping paper.
  • Purchase items with excessive packaging if there’s a reasonable alternative.
  • Throw away recyclable items.
Do

  • Bring your real tree to a tree-chipping event.
  • Use reusable decorations: homemade gift bags, popcorn garlands.
  • Utilize retail product packaging retake programs.

Helpful Tips for Greening Christmas

For some people it’s the happiest time of the year, for others it’s a stressful time of year. Here are some tips on what you can do after the presents are opened:
  1. Recycle your Christmas Wrap
Most wrapping paper, gift tags and Christmas cards can all be recycled in your recycling bag or box. Just remember to remove any metallic or plastic paper, ribbons and tape.
  2. Recycle your packaging
London Drugs provides a comprehensive recycling program for its customers. With our Bring Back the Pack program, packaging from all products bought at London Drugs can be returned for recycling with a receipt. This is a perfect solution to the question of what to do with the Styrofoam surrounding your brand new TV. London Drugs has been partnering with Genesis Recycling for more than two years to ensure that all Styrofoam is properly recycled in their Cold Compactor.
  3. Recycle your old electronics & small appliances
Bring in the old electronics and appliances that were replaced over the holidays for proper recycling. Items you have replaced with a similar purchase from London Drugs will have any recycling fees waived when you bring them in with your receipt from the new one. Computers, DVD players, TV’s, hair dryers, blenders – all are taken to Genesis Recycling for responsible disassembly and recycling.
For those who received new cell phones, there is the Call2Recycle program that collects all used cell phones as well as all recyclable and alkaline batteries.
  4. Rechargeable Batteries Included
Giving an electronic game or toy? Consider including rechargeable batteries with the gift. Popular sizes are all available with compact chargers, and when you add it up they are a great value compared to disposables. It’s a great addition to any powered gift, and will help kids get in the habit of charging their own batteries while thinking about power consumption. It also keeps those gifts going long past Boxing Day!
  5. Green your crackling fire
You can now have a glowing hearth with 80% less pollutants and 70% less greenhouse gas emissions. Duraflame CrackleFlame firelogs (available at London Drugs) are made with 100% recycled and renewable resources. They have switched to a biowax formula, made from renewable plant and vegetable materials - not petroleum waxes. No trees are cut down, as Duraflame firelogs use sawdust and agricultural biomass. So toss another one on. Or, just tune in your new EnergyStar rated flat-screen to the fire channel.

Merry Christmas to Langley Special Education Students

A grinch who stole several brand new TVs and computers from a group of Langley Secondary special needs students hasn't been caught, but there is a happy ending.

The brand new equipment was stolen from their school over the weekend, but now London Drugs has replaced it. President and CEO Wynne Powell says a Langley store manager told head office about the sad situation. "Here they are. They are physically challenged, they are autistic, and [facing] other issues that make their lives more challenging than many people in society, and we just felt that this had to be repaired."

The kids raised the money for the electronics through bottle drives. Powell says he was glad to help. "You can imagine how many bottles and such that they had to collect to put together over $5,000 worth of money to buy this very necessary equipment to help them in their lives."

Call Langley RCMP if you have any info, which could help them find the thief.

London Drugs at the Pan Pacific Christmas Wish Breakfast

During the early hours of Tuesday, November 30, 2010 a dozen enthusiastic volunteers met at the front doors of the Pan Pacific to take part in the annual Christmas Wish Breakfast. As they waited for the one-ton truck to arrive Mary Higgins, buyer for London Drugs, told us why she enjoys being part of this event and that London Drugs has been involved with this since the beginning.

As the truck pulled up in front of the Pan Pacific, musical members of the Vancouver Fire Fighter’s created a backdrop of Santa Claus is coming to town as everyone helped unload the bags of toys and games from the truck. Several bags were loaded directly onto the Christmas Wish Bureau’s truck. The rest were taken by the London Drugs team members to the waiting toy pile. Following that Dan Moy, buyer for London Drugs, took a few moments to thank everyone involved before the team went for breakfast.

London Drugs is pleased to again be part of the Christmas Wish Breakfast with proceeds going to the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau.

Sox in the City

Beginning today, all 10 Vancouver London Drugs locations will be accepting new and gently-used socks as part of the city’s Sox in the City campaign benefiting residents of the Downtown Eastside.

“London Drugs is thrilled to be participating in the Sox in the City Campaign,” said Wynne Powell, president and CEO of London Drugs. “To help kick-start the campaign, London Drugs is donating 1000 pairs of socks and we are also offering *5-pack ladies socks for $1.00 at all of our Vancouver London Drugs stores. Socks collected in the Sox in the City big red boxes will go directly to homeless individuals living in the Downtown Eastside.”

The city’s homeless and poor rely on walking as their main method of transportation and can spend hours at a time out in the cold, wet weather. Basic foot care needs is a necessity and many foot infections can be easily prevented by wearing clean, dry socks.

“Clean, dry socks are essential to help keep people healthy,” said Powell. “We encourage our customers to consider buying an extra pair of socks if they can, and slip them into one of the big red SoxBoxes located at London Drugs.”

Sox in the City’s goal is to collect 25,000 pairs of socks that will be donated to the Portland Hotel Society’s LifeSkills centre – a community centre located in the Downtown Eastside that helps individuals struggling with homelessness, poverty, addiction and trauma.

The Sox in the City’s red SoxBoxes can be found at all 10 London Drugs Vancouver locations until January 31, 2011.

*The 5-pack ladies TuffGear socks will be offered for $1.00 while quantities last. London Drugs has a wide range of socks for customers to purchase and donate to the Sox in the City campaign.

London Drugs Mobile Phone Solutions

Introducing Android 2.2 with Mobile HotSpot!

Google’s Andoid smartphone operating system is making waves. Smartphones that run Android are now the fastest growing platform, and with the cool new features that can be found in the latest release, that trend is sure to continue.

What is Android?
Smartphone manufactures (Samsung, LG, HTC, Acer) have their choice of operating systems that run their phones. Google’s Android has all of the power needed to get the most out of your smartphone, including apps, a smooth interface, touchscreen support, blazing fast speeds, and a customizable home screen. Best of all, because hardware manufacturers can offer a selection of devices, you can have an Android powered handset for as low as $0 when you sign up for a term contract or a no fixed term ‘tab style’ contract.

Mobile HotSpot
Of the many new features in Android 2.2, the latest release nicknamed ‘Froyo’, Tethering and Mobile HotSpot is easily one of the more popular features. Both of these features help you to get the most out of your data plan by turning your smartphone into a portable internet connection. Tethering allows you to connect your netbook or laptop to your phone through the USB cable or BlueTooth and access the internet through your 3G network. Mobile HotSpot actually turns your smartphone into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot where you can connect up to 5 Wi-Fi enabled devices, including netbooks, tablets, or even other Wi-Fi enabled smartphones.

Flash Support
One of the limitations of smartphones is that not all websites are designed in a smartphone friendly way. Android 2.2 takes a step to fix this by offering flash support. Multimedia rich sites that rely heavily on Flash animation are now supported on Android enabled devices, which is great for smartphones, and even greater for this year’s wave of Android powered tablets.

Come in to London Drugs today to see our great selection of Android powered devices.
